87 May 22 Reply Tx Lance . . . lucky to catch this mottled lighting! Regarding the high ISO - I went back to the original raw file to double check - it was shot at 10,000 - and there is significant noise visible (image attached). Somehow the right mix of noise reduction and sharpening worked. Perhaps it's the post-processing software that has improved more than the camera/sensor? And yes - the megapixel battles are largely over. Canon's newest top-of-the-line/pro mirrorless body (R3) has a 24 MP sensor. May 15th
87 May 22 Comment Interesting image. At first I was unsure if I was looking at a reflection. I like the wisps in the sky and bright spots around the sun; not sure what they are - perhaps something in the water. May 4th
87 May 22 Comment Beautiful image of a peaceful family outing! Nicely framed by the greenery. I like that they're not centered.

One suggestion - you didn't mention the focal length used. If you were zoomed out to 500mm - then the 1/320 shutter speed may have been a bit slow. A good rule of thumb is that your shutter speed should be at least 1/focal length; and ideally faster. I mention this, because the lens is FANTASTIC and typically very sharp. Your image on my screen is a bit soft. Might be due to camera shake and/or focus point selected.

87 May 22 Comment Beautiful image. I love your crop. The full frame looks like a tourist attraction/museum with a line of visitors. Your crop conveys a place of prayer/devotion. Well done!

Your processing is perfect - using light to make things pop (the prayer book and some of the art). The blue scarf is a great bonus.

Cindy - definitely play with the new LR masking feature (and other enhancements). Many excellent YouTube tutorials. It's really powerful AND much more intuitive than PS. LR users will have fewer reasons to use PS!

The B&W is perfect. Have you tried toning to introduce a bit of color? If possible, I'd consider leaving more space in front of the alligator (it's nose is a bit close to the edge) and flipping it so he's swimming left to right.

Another thought is to consider a 16:9 aspect ratio, that may work better with a very narrow/horizontal image. So many options!

Sounds like a fun trip!

I like that you didn't center the birds. I enjoy seeing the two different species swimming together . . . perhaps there is a lesson that.

Regarding focus - few thoughts:
1) What do you think was the point of focus? Seems to me that might have been behind the birds; hard to tell? Do you recall the focus mode? Given the small size of the birds in the frame - unless you used the smallest point focus (or manual focus) . . . it's unlikely the camera would have correctly focused on the birds.
2) How large were these birds in the original (uncropped) frame? Can you post the uncropped image? In this image - they are relatively small - and the image has been cropped - so I'm wondering how much of the original frame the birds filled? If it wasn't much - that could account for some of the softness.
3) 400mm on a crop sensor camera is equivalent to 640mm lens; pretty long. Even at a shutter speed of 1/1000; camera shake may have contributed to the softness you describe.
4) Your lens might have been sharper not fully open; one option might have been to bump up the iso to enable to you to close the lens a stop or two and also increase the shutter speed. Of course, then we might have been discussing grain/noise :) And autofocus at smaller f-stops may not work as well.
