I love this image . . . the sharp focus on the trombone is excellent - I'm not bothered by the fact that much of the trombone is out of view (we know it's there). I like the color of it (just as I imagine it would have looked) and bright reflections in the shiny metal.
Regarding your settings - I hardly see any noise (ISO 5000) - whatever you did for noise reduction worked well! Why did you shoot at f4 - using f2.8 would have significantly narrowed your depth of field (something you were trying to do)? You have a fantastic lens (paid a lot of $ and carrying a lot of weight); enabling you to open up to 2.8.
Is this a crop? The sheet music is much blurrier than the distant drum? Might be related to fact that focus behind the focus point is always greater than in front of it - but it could also be related to position in frame (if this is a crop)?
Great image! |

Topaz Denoise AI is one of the better noise reduction programs. It does a remarkable job reducing noise, while preserving detail. Helpful if you shoot dark scenes, high ISOs to enable fast shutter speeds, etc. Almost every photo editor has noise reduction - including Lightroom. There are lots of youtube videos about noise reduction . . . a good place to explore what's out there. |

Thank you - I still struggle with avoiding centering images - something I need to keep working on. I will play with this crop! |

Great shot - Alaska is on my bucket list - but this is a whole different view. Tack sharp/perfect exposure in a vibrating plane! I really like the way the plane frames the mountain rising above the clouds. B&W is perfect. The lighting worked really well; nice highlights and shadows along the mountaintop. I'm guessing you are shooting through glass; unfortunate but understandable! Getting the camera closer to the window and/or using a lenskirt (https://www.amazon.com/Lenskirt-Anti-Reflection-Portable-Flexible-Lens/dp/B005LAW7W8) might have helped minimize the reflections. And others may think the reflections add to the image :) |

Wow - love this shot! I'm not sure I'd feel safe alone in this pitch dark setting; or that my wife would approve. Glad you stuck around to do this.
Perfect blending of the three images. I agree the clouds frame the milky way and add to the image.
One question - how much of an advantage do you find the f2.8? I'm thinking about buying a similar canon RF lens; and the f4 version is about half the price/weight. I appreciate that would have made each of your exposures 40 seconds . . . Any advice? |

Beautiful/peaceful image; and yes - photography birds require patience! That's a great lens - on a crop sensor body you have over 600mm reach!
Regarding the processing - my sense is that your image is a bit dark/flat - and the swans are not as white as I imagine them. See attached edits from Lightroom (I increased the exposure slightly then brightened the whites/darkened the blacks). If you look at the histogram of the image you posted - the exposure is skewed to the left. With B&W - I find it helpful to try to capture the fullest range of tones; helps the image pop.
Of course only you were there - so you know what the scene looked like! Enjoy the lens - a whole new world is within reach. |

I like this fuller view of the scene . . . your edits warm it and make it more inviting. The crop is perfect! I like the way the grass and trees drape/frame the scene.
From my perspective, the fence, signage, and bench detract from the image; but I appreciate that they add authenticity since they were there when you took the picture and would be challenging to remove.
A good reminder that returning to an interesting place - often results in better/different images!

Lance - I'm conflicted about this image. I like the soft color of the ceiling (also reflected on the hanging lights), overall vibe of the place, blurred background (rolls in plastic bags), and intensity/focus of the cook. On the other hand - the angle bothers me (I like things straight!) and I'd like to see more of what's happening below. Perhaps that means it's a good image; since it makes me think and want more. |
