I tried the black background in a lit room with light on the leaf surface - still had shadows on the black background (not sure why). Turned of all the lights - back lit the leaf - and it worked. Enjoy experimenting! |

Jennifer: Well done! This image leaves (pun not intended) me feeling like i'm outside in the late Fall/Winter - on a cool/dreary/rainy day - looking at few remaining/lonely leaves that are "hanging in there" (to quote Chan). The mood/feel is clear. Very effective! The color (or lack thereof) helps convey the season; I was wondering what monochrome would look like? The age/loneliness of the leaf seem to convey the season - even with no color. Do the other leaves help? Or distract? Not sure . . . .

Mike: Although I'm usually not into the abstract - this image holds my interest. I like it!
1) At first - I'm stuck trying to think about what it is? Blinds? a Basket? Can you share an image that shows how this frame sits in the larger leaf? I'd be interested to understanding the orientation - and what we're really looking at? Perhaps that mystery helps hold my interest. I like the "repetition" . . . with some variation in texture/lighting.
2) Agree that the variation in light and sharpness add to the interest. Are the lighter/darker areas due to lighting? Or due to variations in the leaf color/surface? They make the image better.
3) What are the seven bright spots on the bottom along the main stem? Do they help/hurt the image? I find them a little distracting - could remove or crop tighter to eliminate.
Thanks for motivating me to look at more crops/abstract views!

Lance: I like this image - including the name - the posture of the plant in the foreground does convey "leaning in and yet a bit awkward/timid" . . . . very effective. I like the foreground/background blur; always impressed with this lens - even stopped down to f8 - narrow depth of field. The backlighting is great along the edges and almost creates a sunburst in the center of the leaf. Interesting how the leaf in the rear casts its shadow on the other plant.
Few ideas:
1) I'm intrigued/surprised that these plants appear to be growing in sand? Is that real? How do they get nutrients? Makes me think.
2) The plant in the background seems a little distracting for me. The other plant is "facing" the camera - so the one in the rear doesn't seem to help tell the story.
3) There are several imperfections (? grains of sand) on the surface of the main leaf? I find them distracting and my inclination would be to remove them - I suspect you prefer to keep them given you more realistic approach to images in general. I like the grains of sand along the stem.
Well done! |

Welcome to the group - and glad you are "still hanging around" . . . one of the things I like about photography is that one can actively participate throughout life (unlike basketball!). Several key members (with leadership roles and great images) in my camera club are in their mid-90's. I'm always impressed with their vigor.
I like this image - including the imperfections (signs of age!) in the leaf. Well done! Agree that you left them as is - and didn't attempt to remove the imperfections. In this case - I think they help tell the story. The color variation in the leaf and lighting work well! I like the background blur; helps focus viewer. Do you think this would look better if you removed 1 or both other leaves? Do they add or distract from the image? |
