Thanks Mike - I like your suggestion about trying to get the whole umbrella sharp. Regarding increasing power on the speedlites; increasing power increases flash duration and results in blur (the whole event is fast!). With these lights; at 1/64 power the flash duration is about 1/18,000 of a second; I was advised to try to shoot at 1/64 or 1/128 power. I will experiment with more power/longer duration in the future! |

Great shot! I love the contrasts - and almost "glow" of the barn and contrast with the white structure. Curious that one tree is full of leaves and the other is barren.
I note that from the middle to the far left there is a wire fence (? power line) and a white rectangular sign (I'm guessing some kind of warning). I find those a little distracting and would consider removing. They don't seem to belong.
The clouds are fantastic. Is this how they appeared? Or are they moving and blurred/smoothed by the 1/5 sec exposure?

Absolutely - I see that both images work and have different impacts. The portfolio competition sounds like fun; understand that your original works best in that context (with the dark/light juxtaposed in one photo). |

Jennifer: Nice shot - I also like the "layers" of trees (near and far). I'm wondering what the full frame was (is this a crop)? And how did you decide to crop/frame? Do the evergreens on the right help or hurt the image? They do provide interesting contrast - but also could distract?
Definitely works as a B&W! |

I really like this - can't remember when I saw a picture captured with film! I like the ripples going in different directions, the shimmer in the water and varying light.
Did you use a 24mm lens deliberately? Seems a longer lens would be better for this shot (unless you crouch down or have cropped)?
Regarding composition - my eyes wander around the image . . . lots of interesting stuff. Is there way (with light) to focus the viewer on the key subject? Or somehow lead him/her through the image? Feels like the leaf in the center is the main subject - but not strongly so?
I'm glad you shared this - there is a bridge over a stream at a local Botanic Garden; next time I'm there - I will try this (without getting my feet wet).
I would have loved to see a fish in the water . . . . :) |

Lance: Thanks for your kind words. You raise an interesting possibility. Unfortunately the apparatus that drops the water is directly above the impact - so a view from above (straight down) is not possible. Having said that - I could get pretty close - and the appearance would be very different (also changing if the liquid is clear or opaque). Definitely worth trying - I will experiment/share - next time I set up the shot. Traditionally these images are taken along the plane of the water - capturing the water ripple, tall stem (worthington jet from first drop) and canopy (impact of the second drop). |

Thank you!
Interesting how fickle these systems are. I must have spent 5 hours on Day #2 - unable to get a good collision. Frustrating. I will go back to it again in a week.
How do you use milk? What concentration? How do you clean the valve/system after it has milk in it? I tried xanthum gum and was unable to filter it to clear? Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe milk would be better and it's opaque. |
