82 Feb 21 Comment Once upon a time, long long ago I took lessons from the Smithsonian about Ansel Adams "best" pictures. One of the lessons was layers and that his best pictures had between 5 and seven layers. This picture is emblematic of that reason. The layers add so much and make this marvelous picture really work. Interesting to me is that the log or raft in the lake balances and adds so much. Perfect timing, great subject. Bravo Feb 21st

82 Feb 21 Reply I like the cropped version, too. Feb 19th
82 Feb 21 Comment Ruth - The layers give this wonderful depth and pull your eye from front to horizon and beyond. The light is perfect. The lighthouse on the bluff adds a real dynamic to the photo as well. Bravo

82 Feb 21 Comment You are so right. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some "universals", but application of them is totally up to the artist. Feb 6th
82 Feb 21 Reply Stuart and Kathleen - Thank you for your thoughts and ideas. I like both the larger image, which to me speaks of the power of the ocean and how small the surfer is in comparison and the smaller image, which is more about the surfer and a bit less about the ocean..a good thing as well. Stuart, thank you for taking the time to present a cropped version. It makes your point nicely and adds to the conversation. Feb 6th

82 Feb 21 Comment Laurie - what a great capture. I agree with Ruth that the composition and the content are really great. There is an overall softness to the image. The eyes, as Ruth said, but the lack of detail in the feathers and softness of the chicks is what I see. Always a careful balance to add post-sharpness and not make the image look "processed". There is some post software (Alien Skin, I think) that I am told can work magic. Everything is so perfect that that extra would bring this to another level. Feb 4th
82 Feb 21 Comment Kathleen - A fantastic shot. Very dynamic, tack sharp, good tones. I like shot #2 a tiny bit more because the wing is inside the frame. Makes it perfect. Feb 4th
