27 Aug 21 Comment Yikes, and what a wait it will be! Is IU requiring vaccinations? The University of Washington is requiring them, as well as most colleges here. I just heard Amazon and Microsoft also are requiring their employees to be vaccinated.

On to the photo...In my opinion, the choice of monochrome is appropriate for the story and supports the mood. The title is a tip-off, but if it weren't for your explanation, I think this could be a table waiting for a picnic. It probably was quicker to add the white to cover the van and buildings, but if you want this to be about the university, perhaps a college style building would add to the story? The exposure on the white reminds me of fog, which is intense and bright. I really appreciate the texture of the tree.

27 Aug 21 Comment What a lovely capture of an intimate moment! This image in my opinion has a lovely soft background of blue that is complimentary to the birds. To me the image tells a story of the ecology and nature of the birds. What interesting birds too! I love the way the black lines on their heads flow down from the neck, and it gives the tapping of their beaks a sense of motion. Good choice for the 1/1600 sec, that must have been a fast tapping. I appreciate the effort it must have taken for you to get this shot on a cliff 300 ft high! Aug 3rd

35 Aug 21 Comment There was a mix-up of my original photo. I sent the wrong one to Sharon, and then reaalized I had to zero it out from all the adjustments. This is definitely an IR photo, and I just want to clarify that. Here is the original out of camera. Sorry about this, I am getting used to the group. Aug 16th
35 Aug 21 Reply Hi, Just got back from a break to Ocean Shores with family to hide from the heat and wildfire smoke. Thank you for all your insights, I think I will play more with this image. I used a converted IR camera for this image.
I decided to have my camera converted so I didn't need more filters to pack around. I used a custom profile in Lightroom based on a LUT that incorporates the red-blue swap. Then I also used exposure adjustments in Photoshop and then took it into On-! Effects which improved the color dynamics.

35 Aug 21 Comment Sharon, this is really interesting to me, as we have been discussing HDR and infrared on my shot. So you took 3 exposures, each 1 2/3 stops on either side of the original. Did you then layer them?

I really like your original 2, which is not cropped and brings out the context of the place and story. There is an interesting bridge and details of plants and trees. Your final photo is very creative in that it becomes even more abstract, and more like a beautiful painting. My eye is drawn to the writing on the canoes, and I would suggest that you add a blur to them so they are not legible. Your story in the photo is already evident and speaks to a strong sense of place.

35 Aug 21 Comment Hi Stuart, I'm new to the group. I really like the vanishing point of the rails, and the texture of the plants, which is emphasized in the details because of the use of IR. My eye is led to the mountains in the back. It seems to me you were willing to get the tripod down low for the perspective, I appreciate that effort. It is hard to believe that someone just put fence posts across the tracks! I think the sky is really dark at the top, would a graduated filter in Photoshop help lighten it? This is a really nice IR monochrome image. Aug 3rd
35 Aug 21 Comment What a wonderful way to capture a historical building. I really like the detail that IR brings out, with the trees and bricks in the building. I also appreciate the light use of sepia toning, which can sometimes be too much but in this case tells the story of the age of the building. I would suggest that a vignette might help tone down the bright white plant in the lower-left corner. In my opinion, you might also use a brush to lighten the circular dark shadow on the bush on the left side. Thank you for sharing such a charming and historical image! Aug 3rd
