Cindy, what a gorgeous animal! His(her?) pensive look gives the image such a strong emotional quality. Yes, I think this makes a great monochrome and I agree with you about the rim lighting which, to me, kind of echoes the lighting on the horse's head and gives added depth to the image. I like the contrast in the textures - the horse's coat and mane vs. the grain in the wood. Nicely done! |

Mary Ann, I think this image works really well in monochrome and I like your crop, eliminating some of the foliage on both sides to bring more focus to the doors. Nice texture on the wood (of the doors, but also the barrel) that could be brought out even a little more (IMHO). I took the image into PS and adjusted it just a bit so that the verticals are straight - unfortunately, this throws the horizontal beam at the top slightly off but to me it "feels" better to have the verticals corrected. (In LR, the "Transform" function allows us to skew an image in a number of directions so that everything is straight - I often find this helpful, especially with architectural shots). |

James, great angles in this image. It is effective in BW. I like that you have pretty good focus and sharpness on the body of the race car while everything else, including the obviously spinning tires, is blurred to give us a sense of speed. Good tonal range, from whites to blacks, throughout. If this were my image (which, of course, it is not) I might crop in from the right, the bottom and the top enough to eliminate the dark areas while at the same time locating the car slightly differently in the frame.

Paul, I am not sure which version of this image I prefer, but I think the colour has a lighter, more humorous energy than the BW (just my opinion) - It depends on what tone you are going for, I guess. In both version, the top of the fountain appears a little blown out - cropping down from the top to eliminate that area and possibly also cropping up from the bottom would, I think, bring more focus to textures in the face. Such an interesting and quirky subject - well spotted! |
