Great job, Chuck! Not an easy thing to do in my experience. Yes, nice texture in the tree trunks and wonderful strong shadows from the trees. I would love to see you capture an image like this (trees with strong shadows) where the background is less busy. |

A very dramatic image, Cindy. I, too, love those dark skies in monochrome landscapes. You have achieved beautiful sharp detail in the mountains and your capture of those ice chips in the foreground help give us a sense of the atmosphere (and the temperature!). Lovely soft sweeping clouds round out the image. |

I prefer the monochrome version of this, Karl - in the colour version my eye zooms straight to the upper right corner. I don't mind the wine bottles in the lower right (your title includes them); in fact (and it's interesting how we see things differently) for me they form part of the leading lines in this image drawing my eye towards the large foreground fish and from there to those gaping mouths in the upper right. A fun image! |

I, too, like both versions. I like the sharpness and texture you have achieved in the feathers (even the water droplets on the loon's head are visible) in the BW but prefer the softer texture of the water in the colour image. Perhaps selectively sharpening the loon using a brush or a mask? I agree with Cindy's comment about cropping off a bit at the bottom. |

I agree with the story-telling impact of the first image - the connect (or disconnect) between the three women captures and holds my interest and, I think, provides a sense of balance to the scene. Separating it into two images, to me, results in two lovely portraits but the story (at least in the image of the woman on the right) is lost. I definitely prefer the monochrome of this to the colour, in which the vibrant hues draw my eyes away from the women's faces and their activities. Lovely shading and facial tones in the BW and strong sharpness and texture throughout. |

Funny - Cindy's comment about capturing something in the oval "frame" was one I was going to make. I like the monochrome with its interesting composition and strong textures but actually prefer the colour version of this one, Paul. The monochrome version emphasizes the structure - rock and trees - but I like the way the green of the trees "merges" into the soft aquamarine of the lake in the colour image. |
