I guess it all depends what you're trying to achieve. Sometimes I like the entire flower in focus; sometimes I like the entire flower out of focus; and sometimes I like only a selected part of the flower in focus. |

Thank you, Charlie. With respect to PhotoLab 4, I actually bought DxO's Nik Collection and PhotoLab came free with it. I use the Nik Collection a lot. One of the best plug-ins for Photoshop. However, I'm not sure whether PL4 comes free with the Nik Collection these days though. |

Thanks, Ray. I'm starting to appreciate the beauty of cone flowers, too. I have another shot of a different cone flower using a shoot-through technique that I was planning on posting this month. It was a toss-up of which one to post. |

The "tropic queen" butterfly is also called a "soldier" butterfly. They are the same. However, they are different from the "queen" butterfly. |

I thought about removing the red spot as well. But, it didn't seem to call much attention to itself. Seeing that you mentioned it, I'll probably do it. Thanks, Don. |

I like the final composition after cropping the original image, and the blurred background is quite pleasing. You also seemed to have eliminated any noise at ISO 2500. The butterfly looks like a soldier butterfly to me - similar to a monarch which I just shot yesterday and might submit for my August image. Overall, a very nice image. |

Thank you, Cindy. Now that I look at the original, I think I might have darkened and desaturated the image a little too much. I agree with you that the shot looks like it was made with a Lensbaby. It has that spherical-aberration look to it. |

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. As far as getting a "better result," you're absolutely correct that it is "strictly personal taste." I definitely was not going for the entire flower being sharp. |

While the rest of us are shooting pretty flowers, Cindy is shooting grunge! :-) I am also a fan of rust and decay, and this image has it all. The blue and orange tones provide nice complementary colors. I like your cropping such that the diagonal line runs through the corner. If I were to make any suggestions, it might be to crop a little more off the right and top. It will put more emphasis on the windows. |

Beautiful cactus flowers! And, three of them as well (Three is always a good number). The flowers appear to be in good focus, and the slightly defocused cacti in the background brings one's attention to the flowers. The white portion of the flowers seems a little blownout, and perhaps you can bring back some of the detail by toning them down a half stop or so locally with a brush in LR or PS. |

The orange pot of white flowers does catch one's eyes. It does seem a little out of place, but it makes you wonder why it was put there. I like the compositional placement of the pot of flowers, but wonder if all the wood structure in the foreground is needed...maybe crop some off the bottom and the left? |

Your image of a butterfly on a lotus pod is very fortuitous. Both subjects appear to be in good focus, and their colors are similar. I like your idea of decreasing the saturation of the background. It does makes the lotus and butterfly stand out although I might prefer a little more color in the background rather than making it completely desaturated. If I were to make any other suggestions, it might be to crop off some of the image on the right and bottom. |

Very nice image of a black dragonfly with a pleasing plain background. You did well in bringing out the details in the black body. I'm not sure the dragonfly is out of focus though. The eyes, front legs and face appear to be sharp and in focus although the depth-of-field is very shallow. I also find PSA's small-image size often tends to make images appear softer than they actually are. |

What a great shot! I like how the American flag, statue and trees frame the fireworks. And, how the exploding fireworks frame the Washington monument. If I were to make any suggestions, it would be to clone out the bright street light in the lower left corner and maybe darken the street signs a little (or even clone those out, too. But, overall, you certainly captured the essence of the Fourth of July!
