I really like the softness of the final image. I'm usually a 'tack sharp' kind of person but I like the soft, abstract feel of the final image. The colors work well together as well.
I agree with Mike that I would reduce the size of the wording or remove them. I felt distracted and my eye kept going down to read the words. On some photos that I've sold I would put the image in the center of the paper with a wide white boarder around the image and the lettering on the white boarder. This signs the picture but doesn't detract from the image. |

I late to the show this month in giving comments so I agree with everyone else about changing the crop. However, I might even try a circular crop instead of square. The kale has sort of a circular shape and it is bounded by the four square sides...a circular crop might free it up a little more. Just something else to try! |

Interesting approach to the post processing. I like the concept but I'm not sure this was the best subject to posterize. I like the effect on the spikes where some are white, some are gray and some are a mix. That is an interesting effect. I don't like the 'globs' of gray/white around the perimeter as much. To my eye, they seem to detract from the sharp spikes.
Very nice experiment! |

A very nice abstract image. I though it was feathers at first until I read your description. The colors from the crystals are amazing. Are the crystals actually colored or are they playing with the light and bending the light like a prism to get the colors?
How are you lighting it given you are at 40x? backlight? |

Very interesting bug! The top down view provides a very nice composition. As others have mentioned I would use a higher f/stop to get a little more sharpness, especially in the antenna.
I've known Mike Moats for a long time and he is a strong proponent of high f/stops and not using photo stacking. HIs belief is that any softness do to diffraction can be removed with sharpening algorithms in post processing. He uses 'Smart Photo Editor' for post processing. I believe he 'gets away with it' because he is really doing close-up photography and not true macro photography. I think you need to do focus stacking as you get to 1:1 and higher. |

Great shot and I really like the eyes! The yellow in the hoverfly really go well with the flower.
When I try and shoot these handheld I would up the shutter speed to get as much sharpness and less movement as possible. With today's cameras and post processing, you can really increase the ISO so that you can use a faster shutter speed. I'm not familiar with the details of your camera but with my Nikon Z8 I almost never worry about what my ISO is anymore.
I recently purchased an AK Diffuser to use with an on-camera flash to do burst photography and hand-held stacking. I'm still experimenting but that will provide essentially stop action because you are using the short flash duration as basically the shutter speed.
