Thanks Julie. The blurry (Dream) effect comes from the Topaz "Dream filter" and my first application was too heavy and I didn't try to make masks to eliminate the filter from being applied to certain areas like the head and the roofs. The final image still did not have masks to selectively apply the filter. I did it the quick way by adjusting the strength of the filter. Glad you liked the composition/story. I'm new to Topaz and had doubts about the image working without adding some unique artwork and Topaz offers.

Thanks Oliver. I discovered the errors of my ways in the first version. I had converted to Mono and then to the Dream filter at 100% in Topaz. After LuAnn's comments, I re-edited the image by only using Silver Efex to get the tones I was missing. Then applied the Topaz Dream at 70% giving the detail that I thought the image needed. Although that worked, I'm not confident that a 3 second score from a judge will bring me an honorable mention. BTW, I'll be submitting my Oct image early. |

Hi Hattie. I'm the newcomer to PSA, and I find your image very creative attempt to show the 3 types of motion. Bike, Scotter and runner. Not sure I would of tried it and if I did I might not of been able to time the 3 actions so that they did not overlap each other. You did that all very well. I think your shutter speed and aperture were suitable, but I think the slight pan you did for the 3 motions caused the kids sitting to be blurred or they were moving also. I found that out by cropping as the sky and setting sun were distracting me from the subjects. I see you were at the end of your 24-70 so you didn't have the option to zoom further. I'd say to try it again, but not likely to catch such a group again. I generally believe in tight cropping like I have attached. |

Thanks LuAnn. This image was in fact taken in Hoorn, Netherlands in May. The boats are not like any boats I've seen on East Coast. Your comments were right on and I started over. First producing a good color and opened shadows in Luminar, then using Silver Efex-Full Spectrum Smooth, and then Topaz Studio 2. I used the "dream" Look but pulled back the effect from ? 100%? down to 70%. I couldn't get it to work without starting over. I didn't want a white sky. Hopefully you'll like this version better. |

Ahh, so your perspective of the fair was chaos (your word) which I see defined as complete disorder and confusion. Now I see your reasoning for including the people on the left and the other people not in an orderly line. Other images to fit into that subject could of been : demolition derby, crowds waiting to get into portable toilets (no lines) or the same ale stand when the crowd was such that No One was in line and it's every person for themselves to elbow their way to the order window. Sorry, I didn't see your perspective in your intro to the photo. Nothing wrong with the word chaos knowing you wanted to show the "madness" of the fair. |

Thanks for your comments LuAnn, however, as a stubborn Yankee who did free-lance photos for 10 years at a small town 2xweekly in NH , I cannot completely change my opinion. The 2 people on the left add nothing to your story line. They in fact detract. It is unfortunate that I cropped out the flag. To that, I changed the aspect ratio of the crop from the original 2x3 to 3x4 and included the roof and the flag. FYI, an editor would probably ask "lets see the other images from the same location". It only costs time to make multiple images by stepping to one side or the other or holding the camera up high or bending down to get other angles. Unfortunately you might of missed the interactions on the right, but you would not have the people on the left just standing there. Hopefully the new crop addresses your concerns. |

Oliver, you did a fantastic job with this guys image. I love the expression you captured and the lighting on his beard, hair light and eyes. Those were not all evident on the original file. I have to admit that I like LuAnn's edit better without the light bokeh. It brings the viewers eyes to his eyes without the distraction of the light spots in the background. Great image. |

LuAnn, you have picked a subject that is not easy to capture. So many people doing so many different things and you need to narrow down the subjects to tell the story. Your image is sharp and well exposed. I believe that can be accomplished by cropping and eliminating the people to the left of the menu and on the right by cropping just to the right of the older guy whose body shows indecision. The young guy in front of him is convincing his date that she will like his favorite stout. No need for the sky and roof. That's my interpolation and attached is my view. |

Israel and Oliver. A great image and Oliver's cropping and edits just made it better. The essence of the image is the face of the women lite by the candles. The edits to remove the bright lights in the background remove those distractions. Your vision provided the insight as this image was 100% made for Mono. |

Gary, a great image of the Monarch. I like the sepia monochrome as I think the butterfly would not look as natural in black & white. Good focus throughout and bokeh background removes any distractions. Good cropping. I do wonder how you would like the image look if you did a horizontal flip as my eye wants to go to the brighter corner in the upper left. |
