52 Jan 21 Comment Beautiful capture of a fall stream Ally. Love the colors and patterns the leaves have "painted". I can tell the light was coming from the right with the highlighted area of leaves on the upper left along with the light refraction on the water. Jan 10th

67 Jan 21 Comment I like this cropped version. I think you did a great job with reducing/removing the purple. Still nicely blended with the water and sky. It feels like it flows a little better. Jan 25th
67 Jan 21 Reply Glad you like the crop. I always learn something from the critiques and hope I can apply them the next time I am out shooting. Jan 10th
67 Jan 21 Reply Thanks for the keen eye and feedback. A couple stops down from f/8 may have sharpened the upper portion. Jan 10th
67 Jan 21 Comment Very nice image David. I don't have much to add as the others have captured the same concepts well. I too, Like Michael enjoy the "crop" I shoot wide angle images and then crop the hell out of them sometimes... My question is, then why do I shoot wide angle??

You mentioned you were worried about the reflection in the tidal pool. Moving back another foot or two may have gotten more of the lighthouse, but then it would have opened up your image to more cropping as well, and then that can cause more compression of the image. I see your exposure is 1/3 of a sec and your aperture is f/18. This likely accounts for the blurriness of the reflection as the tidal pool looks relatively calm. A little faster exposure would have made the image darker with f/18, so using the exposure triangle may have helped. Aperture at f/8-11, would have allowed more light in allowing you to decrease your exposure time to maybe 1/50 - 1/60.

I love the light on the cliffs and in the foreground you captured in post-production. Decreasing the highlights in the sky definitely brought out the clouds more.

67 Jan 21 Reply Bud, I feel your pain. I lost a "ton" of photos years ago when my hard-drive crashed as well. I now have three locations and a Solid State Hard Drive. Plus a 2TB external drive and Adobe LR cloud. Looking at purchasing a 5TB external drive to free up some additional computer space. Fortunately, we had downloaded several images onto my wife's ipad and I was able to recover several hundred images.

67 Jan 21 Comment Richard: Beautiful light and setting for sure. In all honesty, I like the original image better. I guess this is still withing the Blue Hour window, and the colors in the sand and water reveal that well.

Your cropping off the left is done well as the tree stands distract from the overall concept I think you were trying to get. I was playing aroudn with the image as well as the foreground just seemed like wasted pixels (too much sand). I cropped the bottom up to the just under the water flow from the curve of the stumps. Cropping did bring out some graininess, so I did a radial slider diagonally along the first wave brake to soften and add a little More' feel. I also evened out the top and brought that down a little as there was too much dead space at the top as well. Just another perspective.

67 Jan 21 Reply Thank you Michael. I'll play around with these suggestions. I do notice the forest is a bit brighter than the reflection in the water. I utlized two radial sliders for each, and mirrored the settings for both. I like the concept of balancing the top and bottom and will have to do the same for the L & R sides as well. Jan 10th
67 Jan 21 Reply Hi Larry: Focal point was primarily in the middle of the trees if I recall correctly. However, reviewing the image closer, I am actually wondering if I set the focal point to water wanting to capture a clearer image in the reflection.

This is one of the images I captured at 1/200. ISO was set higher for the low light at 800, 15mm f/4.5. It becomes very grainy when enlarged. and this has no significant changes other than an increase in exposure, shadows, sharpening and noise reduction. Location is the same as the one posted for the round. This was at 7:34 am, and the one for the round was taken at 8:04 am, so a 30 min time difference.

67 Jan 21 Reply Thanks much Bud. It was a beautiful moring for sure and well before the smoke filled the valley. Jan 10th
67 Jan 21 Comment Timing is always everything with lighting shots and you have captured this one beautifully. I'd like to see your idea of cropping out the stump on the right and leaving the one on the left as I feel it adds depth to the image. Both storms converging is pretty amazing as well.

The ND filter really helps create the smooth water and your exposure time is spot on. One I did notice when I enlarged the image is three specs in the middle of the cloud, likely from dust on the sensor. You cannot see them in the image as is. I tend to agree with Stephen about the sky. You have beautiful light coming between the clouds illuminating the stumps, so I would leave them as well. I played with the cropping a little and removed the right stump and brought up the bottom of the image to remove the beach just to the edge of the water providing a more diagonal line. I don't think there is any further need for adjustments.

67 Jan 21 Comment Low and Slow here Michael. You have captured a great perspective of the cypress trees both in the foreground and background. I really like how the water breaks the image into the far background. Very nice light and color with a good dynamic range.

One distracting piece is the tree coming out of the upper right corner. Wonder if you cropped this out and centered the image a little more, the sunlight in the center would stand out more. I really like the way the light is coming through the trees. Not sure what the purple hues in the tree trunk on the right is caused from, as well as the two in the middle of the frame.

67 Jan 21 Comment Bud, what an amazing capture. I am speachless on this image. Clarity, color, light, detail all the way to the wing tips is crystal clear. This is a true nature story and it tells well.

It's amazing how rude some people are and have no respect for those around them. That is the frustration of a photographer for sure.
