67 Dec 19 Reply Mark.. That makes perfect sense. I didn't even think about that and I should have being that the water is still rippling. Looks like new glasses are in order for me this year. Dec 27th
67 Dec 19 Comment Very nice capture of this Blue Heron Mark. The colors and contrasts are subtle and evident for sure. Iwonder if the leaves could be a little darker or richer in color. I do like the position of the bird in the image as it is not spot center which adds to the depth and the reflection in the water is an added touch!

The body of the heron is sharp, but the head seems a bit fuzzy at least along the crown. Beautiful color in the eye, and you have caught it with such an intense look with his catch. I too would agree with cropping a bit more from the left and top just to remove those highlighted leaves.

I have to shoot a few frames with my Tamron to get the image I am looking for. Because of its length, I always feel wider is better. However, I have pretty much succumbed to f/8 for most shots, especially in this type of light. As with Larry's comments, Auto ISO is excellent and I will shoot in Av priority so all I have to adjust is the aperture. Let the camera work for you, especially when shoot wildlife. Landscapes don't move..... Wildlife does LOL..

67 Dec 19 Reply I couldn't agree more. It is hard to find anything else other than a "straight on" approach especially from the bridge. I do have a couple I shot low with the bridge with long exposure as well, but not looking up the cascades. Dec 15th
67 Dec 19 Reply Thank you Richard. It is one of my favorite spots. I haven't been back since we had a big flood in 2013, so I don't know if this has all changed.

67 Dec 19 Comment An absolutely stunning image! I love the contrast between Black and White and the egret is placed perfectly in the photo. I feel you have done this one justice by really enhancing the bird and removing the background.

When I expanded the photo, I noticed there is a lot of noise on the bird from head to body. This cropped size is very nice and it also may be due to the requirments for posting. The reflection of the body in the water appears sharp and clear, but the head is blurred, although I do see ripples in the water. It can be difficult capturing birds (I know that for sure), especially at dawn or dusk and the higher the ISO, the more noise. However, I feel at ISO 640, you shouldn't have too much, but then again, you cannot take a longer exposure for the fear of the bird moving (flying away).....

I look forward to see more of these Richard. I really like the concept!

67 Dec 19 Comment Stunning detail on the wasps here Michael. Crisp and well focused with very nice subtle bokah of the greenery behind. Colors are well blended and the motion of the wings enhance the image and motion of the wasp, nicely captured. I do like the compsition of this image as well with the two wasps in close proximity.

I do like the revision Larry provided as it does bring both insects into closer view and there is less distraction of the flowers below.

67 Dec 19 Comment Nicely cropped and centered. I think these deserve to be centered and without the lone flower on the left. Nicely composed. You mention you shot the image with a wide aperture at ISO 100, exp.time 1/800. I am wondering if you were to stop down the aperature f/6-f/8, if the colors would have been a bit brighter without having to do a lot in post.

With your post changes, it really feels a lot more "washed" out with light and the petals don't have crisp detail. "Plastisized" as Larry mentions. What I see is the light is coming from in front of you based on the shadows on the flowers from the other petals and the one vine. I can imagine you did not want to stand on the other side as it would have casted your shadow on the flowers. I wonder what the image would look like with side-lighting.

67 Dec 19 Comment Totally perfect title. What an amazing image Larry. Tons of detail noted. You have captured the "true character" of a top predator for sure. The concentric rings of the rain drops add "suspense" to the image as well as they circle the alligator. The yellow highlights around the eye is so perfectly lit and the distal end of the snout with the yellow/orange reflection illuminates the entire image well.

I love how the head just seems to be floating in the water and know that behind it is a powerful body. Fantastic image!
