Thank you so much Michael. I definitely like the cropped version as well. Not sure I can do much with the downed tree behind him though. That was the only thing I couldn't correct, which is OK since it is part of the photo. |

Madhu, what a great set of Flamingos. Beautiful colors and lighting. The side lighting really makes the colors pop against the dark background. The foreground is crisp and clear and you get a hint of reflections in the water.
I definitely like the true wildlife aspect versus a zoo atmospher. I've shot in the zoo and they are ok, but have to really set up the shot. I wonder if you cropped the sky down just a little bit, it would bring the birds in closer. Overall, wonderful capture! |

Pictures are worth a thousand words and your story added another "thousand". I have never considered a "moonbow" before, but you have now opened my eyes to another adventure I see coming.
Patience, patience, patience is the key to landscape photography you sir, demonstrated this for a whopping 8 hrs. And the reward paid off. I am glad that Stephen mentioned the second rainbow as I did not see it the first time I looked at the image, but is definitely noticeable.
Spectacular image with great color, light and composition. |

Great composition Richard. I really like the way the bird is positioned and you captured the catch light in the eye wonderfully. The feathers give it feature as if it just ruffling or if there is a bit of a breeze. With your ISO at 1600 it allows for a bit more noise which is also noticeable in the lower feathers than anywhere else. On my canon, I can select High ISO noise reduction in the menu and from I have read about your camera, it has the same features. The may help with the noise.
At nearly 500 mm, with your crop sensor, you are actually shooting at close 800 mm. I believe your cropping is well done, especially from the original and the amount of reflective blue glass off the right side. You do have bit of room to the right as Larry mentioned to move the bird, but it appears to very limited, otherwise you might capture that blue reflective glass.
The deep green leaves are beautiful and detailed with some Bokah in others. Great image. |

I believe it is the masking that caused the distraction. The other thing I think is that the two spider web strings are coming off of the top of the spur or that is what it appears like. If you think about it, if the other leg was down on the branch, the snag wouldn't be visible.
I really like the coloration and the cooler touches you added. |

Michael, wonderful capture of the egret for sure. I do like the way you cropped the frame down still leaving a bit of the left side to add some shimmering to the image from the original. Color and detail are sharp and the talons and beak pop with the orange color. The action of the bird scratching is pristine and I love action in animals.
The one thing that really sticks out is the masking of the tree snag along the leg. I think it would be OK to leave it in the photo as it does create some distraction to the photo overall. |

Larry, I definitely like this version and the additional cropping adds to the image as well. I really like the subtle softness added as this does appear to allow the eyes and nose to be more pronounced. The Gray Wolf has been my favorite animal and I have captured them in the wild in Yellowstone, but too far away even with a 600 mm lens. We are planning a 2 week trip next year to see if we can follow them again and hopefully capture some better shots of Wapiti pack along the Hayden valley near Canyon.
So, in Lightroom, the GND filter is the "graduated neutral density filter"? I am using one of the newer versions of LR and I am not sure I have this. I looks like you also decreased the contrast to allow for the softer version. What other tricks do you have for this?
Thank you so much for your valued comments and suggestions. |

Hello Herb,
Thought I would pop over to see some of my fellow Nature+ Photographers were doing.
First, nice job on the composition and colors. Can't get any better with oranges, pinks, purples, yellows, and reds for sunsets. The water adds a nice purple reflection as well.
Were you shooting this hand-held or on a tripod? Lowlight photos are a bit tricky to capture hand-held with slow exposure speeds (you mentioned 1/40). ISO800, did add some significant noise to the entire photo and this made it a bit more "grainy". May I suggest lowering your ISO to 200, and then trying various exposures 1/60th, 1/40th, 1/30th. Using your histogram can always help set up the best shot as well, and looking at the histogram currently, you are fairly balanced, although a bit darker. Focus is really tough as well. I see you were at f/8, which is probably OK as well, maybe a slight more open f/5 or lower. If you were focusing on the
lighthouse, center-weighted focus may have helped here.
I did play around a bit and hope you like some of the changes. The pier to the lighthouse and the lighthouse itself are fuzzy and it was difficult for me to sharpen them as well.
I did crop a bit more from the top to bring the lighthouse and pier more to center utilizing the rule of 3rds. The other thing I did was removed the pipe standing up in the middle of the bay. That was distracting. |
