62 Feb 20 Comment Well here I am weighing in with my limited judging. Bear in mind others here are experienced at judging and I'm an amateur. My critique is quite different from the others.

First let me say I was delighted when I opened your image! Reading the title piqued my curiosity as I have been to Belgium but never saw anything as amazing as this.

Of the efforts I prefer yours.

This image looks amazing in black and white - such a good choice. I don't know why but it feels a bit like it is tipping to the right a bit, I think it is an optical illusion somehow. To my mind the sky looks great - you did a good job of replacing it.

To me, this image has lovely leading lines that take me off to the bend in the road and then rest on that beautiful cloudy sky. I enjoy seeing the buggy travelling along that leading line. I wonder what journey the people are on. There is mystery in not knowing what is around that corner.

I love the light falling across the buildings. I don't mind the hdr sharpness even.

I just found this image magical somehow. Thanks for sharing Bob.

62 Feb 20 Comment Gary that's very impressive going shooting with your film camera and then developing it - wow!

I think there is something in my state of mind this month that doesn't gel with your image. I feel overwhelmed with all the things going on - lines in every direction and they seem to me to be overbright. I don't know where to look.

Really I think its my state of mind that is interfering with the way I view your image since I started a new eating plan and am feeling quite overwhelmed in general. I always think that what happens when someone views an artwork or photograph is a co-creation of what the photographer or artist did, and what the viewer brings to it - as you can see what I am bringing is not really working for me. But it is interesting to sit with the feeling. Thank you for sharing.

62 Feb 20 Comment Straight away I think her face is too bright but only a small amount - just enough that I notice. To my eye the doorway isn't straight so I find that distracting. Having said that, I do think it is a beautiful, pensive portrait and naturally I'm a fan of her coming out of the dark like that. I like the softness in her - I think she's lovely Israel. Feb 20th
62 Feb 20 Comment Hi LuAnn - yes I'm really enjoying your street photography! There is a good story here and some nice contrasting elements in the story. I like how the girl on the right has short sleeves and long pants, while the girl on the left has long sleeve top and short pants! lol. I love how they all are the same but different - all have cute little shoulder bags and long hair and phones, but each is an individual.

I enjoy seeing them engaging with each other, and using technology to share their experiences with the world, by taking selfies or perhaps sharing photos of the fair and each other, or arranging to meet boys! or maybe a friend who didn't arrive yet. There are a lot of potential stories here - I love that! I especially enjoy that none of them seem aware of you so its a very natural 'slice of life' image.

I like the range of tones, I did notice the background row of lights is drawing my attention.

62 Feb 20 Comment Hi Oliver. A thought provoking image. Its beautifully captured - sharp all over and with beautiful range of tones.

Its astonishing to me that a person can just sleep in public, and not fear for their safety. Really these people are very vulnerable. You captured that feeling for me.

I notice the different textures of the fabrics of the umbrella, the pillow and the blanket, the wood of the umbrella handle, and that he is sleeping on his suitcase. I notice that he is not wearing a lot of clothes - I hope it is warmish weather there. He has a comfortable looking pillow - I am glad for him that he has at least this small comfort. He has chosen for himself some patterned fabrics (by choice or luck) and taken care to keep himself dry. Nevertheless his hair looks greasy, (or is it wet?), which you would expect of someone who has been homeless for some time. Wonderful work my friend.

62 Feb 20 Comment oh wow - thank you all so much for your feedback. I'm going to have another go and see if I can improve her. I noticed I usually go for too much contrast for a woman's portrait - really your feedback is so valued. Thank you. Feb 17th
