62 Sep 19 Comment Hello Israel

I don't mind the guy on the left even though he is not in the same focus as the women. I quite like Oliver's edit, but there would be a lot of work to get the hand looking right in my opinion.

I agree the darkening in the background is perfect, bringing the focus to the faces of the worshippers.

I like the story - there are three generations worshipping - maybe they are a group and maybe they are not - but either way it gives the impression of the continuity of belief that is still attracting the three generations. That has a really nice sense to it. Each expression conveys emotion and holds my attention - even the man.

The other thing is the sense of stillness in each person in the moment, when there are obviously a lot of people moving about in the background. Its kind of beautiful in that way.

You did well in difficult shooting conditions - I like it a lot and I prefer it in black and white.

62 Sep 19 Comment I will comment on your edited picture. When I compare it to the original I actually said 'wow'. The second image is really quite different due to the first one being blurry intentionally, and the second one being sharp in most places.

Tonally, it has a look of graphite pencil drawing and maybe a little black pen. There is terrific detail in many places including the nets, the water the clouds, and the shape of the boats and masts. The man on the left has a bit of a blurry looking head. The rooftops that are dark also have a bit of blurry look to them - is it to do with the darkness? Anyway the rest of it looks kind of amazing to me.

I like the story too - its such a busy dock with all those boats on the narrow river. My favourite image this month.

62 Sep 19 Comment Hi there Gary

I also photograph monarch butterflies and you have done well to capture this male - it's wonderful to see the spots on his body and head as well as the detailed pattern on the wings and his legs and antennae. The flowers show good detail too but in a different way than in the colour.

I normally use a faster shutter speed - as LuAnn suggested - minimum of 100 when hand held with a 100 mm lens. Try it and see what you think.

If I had to try to pick something ... I wonder if the top edge could do with a tiny bit more breathing space? Great job.

62 Sep 19 Comment Hiya Hattie - that's great creative visualisation and planning there. I like the crop you did, as the picture feels more fairly weighted with the dark at the bottom and top, and also gives context - there are trees and grass so its maybe schoolgrounds. There are stripes of light and dark running across the picture, and then a kind of circle of children which goes against the straight lines in a way I like. I LOVE the stationary girls in focus while the others are whizzing by.

Having the sign in it gives information about where we are and the title telling us we are waiting for the fireworks let's me see that its not imminent and people are finding different ways of passing the time. You were lucky your subjects were happy to be photographed and I think you have succeeded in your goal.

I have to tell you something - I am a very curious person when it comes to body language so I am drawn in to see what is the relationship between the girls ... I like that sense of intrigue and trying to work it out. The shot you chose leaves it to the viewer to interpret.

62 Sep 19 Comment hmmmm ... I'm not sure about cropping it - on one hand I think maybe it could be cropped to the top of the sign, but seeing it I don't really prefer it that way and now I have seen your comment about the flag, which I agree is important in the picture.

What I do like is the tonal range - I don't know why I respond to that in pictures, maybe it is something I want to do better so when I see it done right I really see it. The sharpening is spot on and is not overdone - the details that now show on the creases on the plastic rain jackets looks great.

I see a scene which reminds me very much of fairs I have been to, long lines at the ordering station and that gritty, frustrating feeling when there are two converging lines instead of just one - why don't people just get in the line! Especially when it has obviously been raining. I like the interaction of the couple, and the guy pondering what he will order, and then the others just doing their own thing. I don't mind the people on the edges coming into the photo - it shows its a busy fair - it has a kind of a 'slice of life' feel to it.

62 Sep 19 Comment Yes - I also feel something when I look at this image. He isn't posing and his sense of discomfort is obvious and I feel a bit uncomfortable too - perhaps like I am intruding. The others have suggested darkening the bokeh and I agree, but maybe not too dark.

I'm really impressed with his eyes - they stand out to me, and carry all that sadness in him. I think you have done a great job with his face, bearing in mind he is so gaunt - he is well lit I think. Well done.

62 Sep 19 Comment Thank you all very, very much for your comments. I find in lots of ways that Scott's classes are more of a have a go and ask if you get stuck rather than a formal class kind of thing. I think I set my settings for one station and then moved to a different station - probably the natural light one and needed to change my settings and then moved on and forgot to reset them.

One thing someone else told me, who recently did a different workshop, was that you should take the time to set your model in a pose and then move around them taking the shot from different places. I find in Scott's courses the models often move and change position quickly and there are people waiting or taking the shot at the same time it makes it kind of rushed. So, the take home message is to try and book her for myself or myself and another photographer and really take our time. This would mean I wouldn't be picking the best from what I took, some of it by chance, I would have time to think about what pose I want, what is in the picture - ie the back of the chaise lounge and her hidden hand. I did do some setting up and posing which I am very pleased with, but there is definitely opportunity to be more thoughtful about my shots.

Additionally, thank you so much for your comments about blowing out the highlights, dark hair on arms, etc. These are honestly fantastic feedback and I am so thankful to you all.
