I think your suggestion of "Roots of the Violin" is my favourite so far, but there is still time for suggestions before I have to submit it.

Definitely better Brenda. You said this was for a Nature comp, is that club or Salon? Bear in mind that Salon images are only seen for a few seconds so being hidden is not necessarily an advantage.

Well caught Mitch, I missed them when I was in Iceland as it rained solidly every evening for 4 days.
I would agree with your crop off the top and bottom, it makes the Aurora feel wider. Three areas I would investigate are the bright window in the tent, the brightest part of the image that pulls the eye. Secondly the tree line not being horizontal (but this may throw the tent out of kilter and risk splitting the image in two). Third, the whiteness of the snow, it has a very Grey feeling.
What I would have liked (but impossible) would to have undisturbed snow in front to the tent like the snow on the right hand side. I guess you didn't stroll off to the right to get a shot?

Hi Jason, a well seen reportage image. My initial thoughts were this is the 'fox' and he is turning to run from the 'hounds' before they are released (my warped sense of humour).
Obviously you missed his hand but that can't be helped when grabbing a shot, and is probably not too important in this image as its about the story that's going to unfold. You also lost the handler's heads but this is a good thing as they are not part of the story, its just about the boy and the dogs.
A bit more light in the dog's faces would improve things.

Hi Brenda, I agree that the crop is about making the Alligator more prominent, but possibly a bit more on top would give more information about the setting, however I still had to look twice to find it.
As Sunil has said, this one is a tad oversaturated, so masking off the Alligator and bringing the saturation down may lift the Alligator too.

Lovely portrait but I have to ask if was this a Manakin? It makes no difference as it looks very lifelike.
I prefer your crop as it gives more info about the period and keeping the left hand wooden door frame edges it nicely, in fact I would be tempted to go higher and include the door frame detail and all of the old lamp on the bookcase.
My only other comment is the reflection in the wall poster draws my eye and doesn't seem to fit the scene. |

Merry Christmas (belatedly) to you too.
Well captured detail on the small lights, and the figure is just in the right place and not blurred (hence the high iso). Did you use Denoise (or similar) because of the high iso?
The only comments I'll make are the notice board on the left of the main display is very bright, and I'm not sure the blurred branches on the left help this really crisp image. |

Super image Helen, and a good choice of crop to remove the sign and some of the foreground. The figure really gives this a sense of scale.
I'm with Sunil and prefer the colour version as it tells more of a story about where it is. If you want to go Mono then I would add more contrast to make it punchy.
Also as Sunil says, if you shot this in Raw you can bring it in at a different exposure level (ie reduce the light area) and use a mask to bring the 2 images together.
