If you want to spend some more time you could always clone the wooden fence post where the straight poles were, lol. |

Would it gain an acceptance, I couldn't say as it depends on the judges on the day. I have had some images in the same circuit be rejected by one set and win a medal from another.
I think this does have potential as it's got interest and a story, but for Salon's it's also about impact (less than 4 seconds in front of the judge) and this does do it for me.

I have now found it in PS but never use the crop tool (that's why I guess), just the rectangle selection tool by eye and then Edit,Crop.
I've also Googled the Golden Ratio and read lots about it, but to be honest it means nothing to me, a bit like the story of The Emperor's New Clothes.

Hi Jason, I've never heard of Cropping Overlays, I use layers and blend modes but will have to look these up. I also prefer your contrast version, my original is way too bright. |

Hi Mitch, great capture and looks more like skill to me than luck.
I know nothing about Whales so feel free to totally disregard this comment. Is the blue item in the centre of the whale its water spout? To me it looks like a smoke grenade that I use in portraiture, and if you don't want to use it in nature competition could you make it more water like?
Secondly, if you are still reading this, the dead trees in the background draw my eye upwards, so again if you don't want to use it in nature competition these could be sorted out.

Hi Jason, A handsome couple of fellas and very wise of you to use a long lens. I agree with your crop to remove the distraction of the other one.
I find the whole image a bit too busy with colour and texture, so tried to take some out of the rocks to make the beasts more prominent.
The sky has been darkened and it feels like a storm brewing, but the rest of the scene is bright so the two don't seem to gel to me.

Hi Helen, interesting location, something we would never see in the UK. Sunil is on fire this month and I have to agree with him again, the background is just that to give some feeling of location but the Pelican is where we want our eyes to settle.
I dropped your file into Camera Raw, hit Auto and then moved Dehaze to 100%. I've also kept the reflection from the water as to me it adds something to the scene.

Super street shot, and using monochrome was the right choice in my book. I have to disagree with Helen (that's twice this month, good job she lives on the other side of the planet) about straightening the two chimneys, they are part of the disorganised scene and the buildings give the verticals that keep the image upright.
I can see a story here that makes it so much more, and because of that I would not crop off the left hand edge. This guy is turning his back on everything going on behind him, and the big man walking away is a strong part of that. It would mean playing with the large white triangle on the top left building, but I think your instinct to take the first image was the right one. Love it.

Hi Jim, interesting image and good recovery from the RAW file, there's lots of detail to look at now.
I have 2 thoughts about which way to go with this, because for me the windows just don't look right.
First: As you have the RAW file, can you get a better exposure just for the windows, then bring the 2 images together (hold shift to align) and then use a mask to add them in?
Second: Crop them out completely, this would depend on what you want to show in the final image, a memory of what you saw, or a focus on what was happening.

Hi Brenda, Lovely image and I too agree with Sunil's comments, but not necessarily with Helen about the grass line because the top of the corn gives you the horizon line, but try both.
If you have so many more to choose from have you one either without the fence or at least with some separation from it. Here's a quick clone to show the difference.
