I like both the low-key and high-key versions of your image Mike. Your original image is "anchored" within the frame because you can see the stem. In the high-key the flower seems to be floating. Some of the stuff I have read describes high-key as "youthful" and "optimistic" and they go on to say that it used a lot in advertising food and beauty. On the other hand low-key is more sombre and dramatic. Whatever, I really like both but at the moment I am captivated by high-key. Do you have a preference? |

Thanks for those very pleasing comments everyone. Apologies for not getting back to you all individually - the comments all seemed to come in at the same time. I'm still not sure about the technicalities of high key photography but I do know that I like it, especially in mono. Attached is another photo of the dog with no shadows and very little definition - just in case you are interested. I love the expression on the dog's face but it's a pity his head seems to be disconnected from his body. |

I like the story happening here. The boys look quite poor and they are all dressed in the same ill-fitting clothes. Looks like they only have one rod and at the moment the big boy is in control of it. We'll never know if the other two got a turn. The white thing does spoil the image somewhat. Good depth of field. All in all, pretty good for a 50 year old image. Has Silver Efex Pro 2 contributed to the quality? |

Very high contrast with lots of black and white and not a huge range of tones in between. The tower on the right stands out as the focal point of the image and is offset by the group of building on the left. Nice contrast between the oblong structures on the left and the more elegant, tapered tower with its round sections. A nice peaceful scene to cruise past on a warm evening. |

Yes, brings back memories of my primary school where left-handed students had to learn to write right-handed. I can't imagine this image in colour. Lends itself perfectly to black and white. |

Just for interest - is that the 300mm macro lens Adi? My first serious camera was a Nikon D90 and I had the 300mm. Great for macro but also for shots like this.
The two images give me different impressions. The colour version looks like late afternoon in Fall while the black and white almost looks like a Winter night scene. I love the way the trees in the foreground have caught the light making them stand out against the gradient tones in the forest behind. |

First COVID and then rain locks you inside. The moodiness of the image seems to match your mood when you took it. Quite minimalistic and graphic. The little buds on the branch are an encouraging sign of life. An interesting composition with the horizontal branch cutting across the vertical lines of the rain. |

Hi Mike - I'm no flower expert but it looks and sounds like a Clivea to me. It usually blooms in our autumn as well. I think you have captured the flower beautifully. It's a pleasing composition and the lighting is really good. It probably looks better in black and white than colour. I couldn't suggest any changes. |
