80 Dec 20 Comment I agree with Carol on this that the monochrome is not the way to go on this. I think the color in this image is extremely compelling and to me, it's what really makes the image. Dec 5th
80 Dec 20 Reply Thank you Victor. I agree with your suggestions, and I like how you reworked the image. I had not noticed the brochures that you mentioned and during the time that I watched this couple I did not see evidence of a promotional event. But you got me wondering about that, so I zeroed in on the area by and behind the Reserved sign and it does appear like there's some kind of brochure or bookmark there. I can't quite figure out what it is, but it's interesting that you picked up on that. I walk around Forsyth Park quite a bit because it's a great place to photograph people, and I've never seen this setup before. Here's my zeroed in view. Dec 5th
80 Dec 20 Reply I agree that my crop on the left is tighter than I would normally make it too, but on the other hand, I found the pole too distracting. The other option of course is to remove the pole. The only reason I thought the cropping on the left might work was because she appears to be looking at the camera as opposed to out of the frame. For that reason, I thought maybe she doesn't need more room on the left. I think the mannequins and the SALE sign help to keep the context of the image. But as Ed suggested, play around with the crop and see what works best. Dec 5th
80 Dec 20 Reply Thank you Carol. As I mentioned, I have several shots that I took of this couple, including her sitting at his level. But I didn't find the other shots to be as compelling as this one. It's interesting that you mention that you expect to see them celebrating but you don't feel a connection with them. I think that's part of what makes this image intriguing. If you saw some of the other shots I have of this couple, you would see that while they appear to be celebrating their anniversary or love, they in fact are just going through the motions and aren't really in love at all. I think that's part of what makes this image so interesting and compelling to me. Dec 5th
80 Dec 20 Reply Thank you Ed. I agree 100% with your comment. I actually realized that myself after seeing the image posted here. Thanks for making that suggestion. Dec 2nd
80 Dec 20 Comment I really love this shot Victor, and I think you should definitely enter this into competition. I agree with all of your comments about competition judges, as those things have been my experience too. But this one in my mind is a clear winner. It's one that if it were mine I would cherish it as one of my all time best.

I like what you've done with it, and I love that blue color. Absolutely I think the color combination is working on this. This is just an all-around wow shot in my mind and I don't see anything that I think would need correcting or improving.

Great job, Victor!

80 Dec 20 Comment This is a nice shot Ed and you did a great job with getting the whites, blacks and midtones exactly right in the black & white version. It really pops out at me. I like the emotion of the moment. I think this could be said to be that iconic "decisive moment" that Henri Cartier Bresson suggests we look for.

I like both the color and the black & white versions. What I like about the color version is the reflections in the window are much clearer and give us an entirely different picture. But the black & white looks like it shows us the subject that you are really wanting us to see.

So, great job on both. There's nothing I would change.

80 Dec 20 Comment The woman with her dog look interesting, and I can see why you chose them as the subject for your photograph. I think the two mannequins at the back of the image are interesting as well.

I think that you could do some more cropping though to really focus the image on the woman with the dog and the two mannequins in back. For example, I think the street pavement and the curb are unnecessary to the image. Also I think the movable pole on the left is unnecessary to the image as is the guy walking on the right. The guy walking on the right is also cut off by the right edge of the image. I also think by cropping more you can make the woman and the mannequins stand out more.

My suggested crop is below.

Two other suggestions regarding the actual shooting of this shot (which you can't do anything about now): 1) A fill flash, such as the flash on your phone, I think would have helped this image a lot. Her hat is darkening her face too much, and I wasn't able to improve on that in Lightroom. And 2) I would suggest getting lower to street level to take this shot. I think it would be more dramatic if taken from a lower angle.

Overall, interesting image with interesting subjects.

80 Dec 20 Comment I like this image a lot. I like the way you've really zoomed in on her face in the crowd. And with the other face and the other person so close in the image, you've done a good job of showing that she is in a crowded place. I like the intent look on her face. It makes me wonder what she is thinking. And I like the mystery of that. Another well done image Bill. Dec 2nd
80 Dec 20 Comment Hi Bev, I actually like your original image before you blurred the background much more. I don't think in this case the background is irrelevant to the image; therefore, I would show it. To me it gives the viewer a better sense of place and what is going on. It's not just one single street artist doing this painting. There are several at work.

I do like that you cropped down from the top. I don't think we need to see as much of the people walking in the background. They could perhaps be blurred while leaving the other artists in the background in full focus.

I love the colors in this image. They all blend to together well and complement each other. And that includes not just the main subject of the photograph but also the colors in the background. And I like the way my eye flows through this image (the original image). It seems like a natural flow that keeps my eye in the image much longer than it would with just the singular subject.

My only suggestion is that I would like to see more of the foreground subject's face. I think the hat darkens it too much. You might try lightening the exposure on his face in order to bring it out more.

Overall, this is a nice image. I like it a lot.

80 Dec 20 Comment This is a really interesting image to me. I love photographs with mystery that tell a story and this image does that for me. Part of the mystery for me is wondering if this is a homeless couple who have chosen this spot to erect a possibly discarded tree and celebrate Christmas. And of course, that is one of many possible stories that I can imagine from this image. The tree is scraggly; she has patches on her knees (not looking like patches that the store would have put on). The ornaments are sparse. It just gives me that kind of story. And I like the tenderness of the moment. Whatever their circumstances, the couple appears to care for one another.

I would like to see more contrast between the subjects of the photograph (the couple and the tree) and the background. I would suggest highlighting them more perhaps by adjusting the exposure of the background to contrast more with their exposure or perhaps blurring the background some (just enough to create contrast while still being able to see that it's at the beach).

Again, it's a very interesting photograph, with mystery and story to it. My homeless story is just one of several stories that I can imagine from this image. And that's what makes it interesting to me.
