Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
80 Nov 20 Comment Hi Carol, Today's the last day to comment on our November photographs, and I noticed that I hadn't gotten any comments from you. I thought at first maybe you didn't like my image, but then I checked and found you hadn't commented on anybody's image. So at least I don't feel like my image is unloved anymore. LOL! But if you get the chance today to critique our November images, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on my image. Thanks. Nov 30th
80 Nov 20 Reply Thank you Victor. That would be great to meet you and go out together to take some images. I appreciate the offer and will definitely plan to look you up if I do get back out that way.

My daughter's house is in the 4400 block of Southeast Gladstone. It's an interesting area to walk around and take photographs as well. I think Sellwood is on the same side of town as her place. But I haven't been out there in a couple of years now. She moved to Savannah, GA and now rents the house out. But I would like to get back out there one of these days.

80 Nov 20 Reply I think that your subject looks like a typical Portlander. My daughter lived for about 10 years on Gladstone Street in Portland, and she still owns that house and rents it out. We always enjoyed visiting there. Portland is such a great city for walking around and meeting and talking to interesting people and for doing photography. It's a very down to earth city, with a counterculture that always kept Portland interesting to us. Portland also reminds me a lot of Pittsburgh where I grew up --- a blue collar town with older buildings and houses and lots of bridges. Except Pittsburgh never had the counterculture when I was there (although being young we created our own version of a youthful counterculture). I would love to be in Portland taking pictures. It's a great place to do so. Nov 18th
80 Nov 20 Comment Cute puppets. I would probably crop in from the left for a better composition. Nov 17th
80 Nov 20 Comment Everything Victor said is spot on and reflects my thoughts when I first looked at this image. And I'm not just speaking of the crop, although I really Victor's crop. And I really like how he brightened up the image. It's a nice capture to get all that synchronicity with the lines of the shirt, the zebra and the flags. I love that. But Victor's suggestions to improve it are spot on, including removing the man on the left. Nov 17th
80 Nov 20 Comment Hi Bill, I think you might have had a possibly stronger shot with this scene. From that perspective, I agree with Karen's suggestion about stepping some to the right and perhaps getting the shot more directly in front of the people. But the other thing that you might think about from that perspective would be to turn your camera sidewise and take it as a portrait shot. I think that might cause me to feel more of an emotional connection with the subjects. Nov 17th
80 Nov 20 Comment This appears to me to be a very well thought out image. I'm imagining that you found this composition of the windows and the reflections first and then waited for the right subject to enter it. That's a technique that I've used myself when I find an interesting composition, particularly where the light is creating reflections like this or narrow enough to highlight my subject.

But then you got this really interesting subject to come into your composition. I like the look the subject is giving you and what really works well I think are the colors. First, red and green create the strongest of contrasting colors, so that's good. But secondly, while the colors aren't exactly the same, I think the colors and patterns of the man's shirt perfectly complement the bricks in the reflection. It's like you couldn't have asked for a more perfect subject to walk into this composition for you.

As for the chain, I don't find it distracting. Since it's attached to his shirt, it made me wonder if he had the dog on the leash or if the dog had him on the leash. LOL! As for the branch of green leaves in the upper lefthand corner, I didn't notice it either until Ed pointed it out. So, I don't find it distracting. And you definitely would not want to crop it out because that would ruin your composition. So, I would leave the branch in.

Overall, this is a very well done image, Victor.

80 Nov 20 Comment Having lived in Washington State for 10 years from 2001 to 2011, this image brings back many fond memories. I think it's well done, although I do agree with Victor about the fish on display being too bright. So, I would take his suggestions on that.

I'm torn on the cropping though. I like both of the crops suggested by Victor and by Bill, but I also really like the full scene as you show it. That's probably because having lived there, I don't find the throwing of the fish to be so unusual anymore. So, I enjoy seeing the market as opposed to focusing all of my attention on the the throwing of the fish. And I think this is a good view of the market. But on the other hand, cropping in as Bill and Victor suggest does put more of the focus on the man behind the counter and makes it a strong image that way.

I like the way you positioned yourself for taking this image also. I think you are positioned perfectly for getting the right angle on the shot. Well done Carol!

80 Nov 20 Comment Hi Ed, This is a nice strong image. I like that everything is sharp, and I like the boldness of the black and white. It's much stronger than the color version is. And I think you cropped it perfectly.

Like Bev, I too found myself intrigued by the sign behind these guys. I spent time trying to figure out what the last line in the sign says. In fact, that's what I looked at first and I spent time there before going to the rest of the image. So, while I understand the juxtaposition that you were going for, and I think it's appropriate, the sign was a bit distracting to me.

But this is a great image in that it tells a story I think, and it is a good representation of the times right now. Well done! You did a good job bringing this scene to life.

And congratulations on your show. You'll have to tell us about it once it opens in the future.
