Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
79 Oct 19 Reply Thank you Karl. I also think we agree on more points than we differ. Yes, we do need to help each other to the point that it's commonplace. In the military, when faced with an enemy that will take us out, only the important things matter. When faced with imminent death, we can more clearly see what is important. As I sought out naturally occurring groups to photograph, I found the groups to be polarized for the most part. Even among the homeless populations, people tended to group with people that "looked like them". It was only in churches, schools, concerts, movie theaters and similar venues where I found a diverse array of people interacting, but for the most part, only within the confines of the venue. We are not there yet and I have to have hope that we'll get there. Oct 24th
79 Oct 19 Reply Hi Karl and thank you for your comments! I'm an Air Force veteran of 23 years (both enlisted and officer). We, as Americans, did the Vietnam veterans a huge injustice in the thankless welcome they received coming home. I believe the only ones that understood it best were our brethren in arms. My dad was a Vietnam veteran. I chose my unity project because so much frustration was bottled up inside me about the disunity of our nation particularly at this point in time. Perhaps, I feel it more so as an African-American person. I experience the world differently than my Caucasian brothers and sisters. It scares me that the whole world sees the weakness in our disunity and it's easily exploitable by nations wishing our country harm. It serves to distract us and weaken our military stance. There is no argument that any nation with a united base is stronger than a nation divided. I wanted to focus on the coming together of our diverse nation using the strength of unity--whatever it takes. Just as America is made up of people from different races and ethnicities, we may look "differently", pray differently (those were Buddhist prayer beads as one example), and we really don't have to look that hard to see we're all Americans as a uniting theme and we really can (but will we?) respect the humanity in each other and lift each other up for the common good and safety of the nation. I agree with you "United We Stand" is anything but 'united' in practice, I was hoping through this project that the images would capture the viewer's attention long enough for them to internalize the message of unity; understand their own parts in it; and collectively create change to strengthen our nation. I used our flag as a metaphor for our nation, and something outside of ourselves that we could unite around. I truly believe that our strength as a nation depends on all of us standing together as a united front. Oct 24th
79 Oct 19 Comment Hi Judith, I love both images. I really like the warmth and lighting and texture in the color image. Great story and subject, the shoes have a bit of character that lends itself to storytelling. I like the interesting angle you used to take the shot and the flipped version of the shot. Oct 22nd
79 Oct 19 Comment Hi Valerie, You captured the power and motion of the wave well, I love the mist action. I also like the backlighting on the feathers of the gull. I had the same questions as the others on the column and I see that you answered it. The monotone image adds to the power of the image, emphasizing the spray of the water. I rented the Tamron 150 to 600 once to photograph a kite festival. I liked it, but found it a bit heavy. I shot the kites hand held, but plan to use a good tripod the next time. Oct 22nd
79 Oct 19 Comment Hi Sandra,
The first thing catching my eye was the beautiful, soft colors--much prettier than the original. Interesting technique, makes me want to try something like this! I hope you continue to explore this with your camera. I recently was amazed at the work of a landscape photographer friend of mine who used a similar process with a water series he did. Wow, the images were powerful and exciting as the back story of the pictures. I'll look up Charles Needle, you've got my creative juices flowing!

79 Oct 19 Comment Hi Karl, I always look forward to seeing your images. I love the pose as well and I really like the black & white version of this image posted by Judith. I agree with Valerie about the foreground distracting me from the beautiful model. The black & white version seemed to take some of the focus away from that. Oct 22nd

79 Oct 19 Comment Wow, I really love this image! Gorgeous colors, love the textures and overall composition. I love how you chose/enhanced the texture colors to match the color in the hair of the ginger model. The expressions on the models were perfect for what you envisioned. I agree with Ian that it would be nice for the models to see what you've accomplished with the image. Oct 22nd
79 Oct 19 Reply Hi Valerie, Thanks for the birthday wishes and comments! I posted the other pictures above. Only six of the images (selected by my instructor) will be used in the exhibit. I was excited to be one of the 3 students that were selected to be followed throughout the project by a local news channel. It was so much fun being filmed while I was shooting the project. The last session will be an interview about the project and will probably be shown in January with the planned exhibit. Oct 22nd

79 Oct 19 Reply Judith, thanks for the birthday wishes! I had a lot of travel this past month and also working on the project. I initially didn't not want to focus on the person so I thought making the image B&W for the background would help. I was going to do the project in my studio but was unable to have people be reliable to come to the studio for the shootings so I did the next best thing, I searched for existing groups in different community settings. That's why I used the strobes on the flag. I had 4 major themes for the unity theme: Prayer, Transcendence, Solidarity and Allegiance. Unity was to each other as Americans and as a nation, which will mean different things for each person (prayer for unity for the nation; perhaps forgiveness to get past the difficult race issues; coming together for the good of the nation and focusing on the love for our country to strengthen the nation. Here are some of the pics in the project (contact sheet) since this will only allow me to upload one picture. Oct 22nd
79 Oct 19 Reply Thanks for your comments, Susan. I re-shot and processed this image. I used a smaller aperture to ensure good detail and had the lady change her blouse to one without a print and did a better masking job. Pretty busy this month with the project finally did my last photoshoot on the project. It was challenging and fun and I learned some things along the way. Oct 22nd
