Now I get it! The original is the big image. The two on the side are not originals, but variations 1 and 2 created by using two different filters. |

Nancy, I like the line created by the vehicles with the lighthouse. It helps to guide my eye through the image. The bus gives the image a burst of color that complements the dry landscape. Nice job!
Did you happen to take any photos of the bent trees? |

Hi Lisa, I would love to see the "original" original to see what effect each filter had on the image you captured. Were the colors more vibrant?
I agree with the vintage look. You captured this lonely road on a winter day nicely. |

Thanks for your comments and suggestions!
I took a rather long hike to the other side of the island. Many old dirt roads were still there, a few derelict buildings, lots of birds, and a great view over the ocean. I lived in California for 20 years before I finally got to the islands. Most people just take the ferry to Avalon on the main island. I found a National Geographic 5-day adventure cruise that visited many of the islands, with a final stop in Avalon. I highly recommend the trip! |

I love photos that highlight patterns that weren't intended. You can see love in everything Connie.
I, too, was intrigued with your image. Here is my version. It would look better if the full resolution image was manipulated. |

What a fun road! It looks as if they made it curvy on purpose, and not by necessity. Do you know anything about the construction of the road?
Can you post the before photo? Other groups I am in post before and after so we can see the changes and perhaps comment on them. For example, on the upper right there appears to be branches suspended in the air. Was it like that or is this an artifact of removing wires? Did you also remove a power pole?

And that's why I like the Digital Dialogues. We don't have to submit to win awards! This is about fun and experimentation. I used to attend a local club and submit to their monthly competitions. Although I did win a fair amount of awards, I also caused judges eyes to be yanked all over the place in a bad way! "My eye is drawn to this" and so on. It got to be a bit humorous! |

Thanks for your comments Bruce. I especially like your comment on the crop. I prefer the original myself, but I get influenced by the fact we can submit a 1024 px longest direction image, and the size of the screen, so I decided to make him more visible. But if I were to print a 16 by 20 image, I would use the original. Perhaps I shouldn't think too much about the PSA constraints!
Yes, if you've ever been to Death Valley, the end point always looks closer, but it is quite a trek out to the center. |

Wonderful image. Getting up early paid off. The sun is perfect and highlights the plane. Well done! |

Hi Mark, This image doesn't do much for me. As you pointed out, the lens is too slow and the shutter speed far too slow for sports. Next time you might consider using a tripod and not zooming (crop later). You might also try a 6400 ISO, as it is far easier to remove low-light noise than to make a blurry photo sharp. |

Hi Harley, While the concept of photographing a photographer is interesting, to my eye, the empty space in the center detracts from the story. The second fire pit doesn't seem to add much. Have you thought about cropping it? |

Bruce, you achieved your goal of creating something different. To me, it almost looks like a negative image. But I do like the effect.
I see many artifacts around the edges of the trees and in the sky. The sky banding is likely due to converting to a small jpg (as we must), but I'm not sure about the trees. Were you working with a raw image? |

Thanks for the comments Mark. I think it's a good thing you didn't notice the shirt and hat. I was hoping people's first thought was NOT "Oh she must have set up that shot!" |

Thanks for the comments Harley. Yes, Bryan Peterson was a phenomenal teacher. I was saddened to learn of his death. That man was actively giving workshops to the end. He seems so fit and lively when I took an in-person workshop with him.
We once stopped in Death Valley on our way to somewhere else when it was 118 degrees. We wanted to feel what that heat felt like. We stayed in the hotel. Most hotel guests were standing in the pool to stay cool. The pool was 90 degrees! |
