I learned the trick is to use a fast speed and burst mode. But for this image, I knew the bird would show up as soon as I stocked the log with yummy suet. :-) |

Thanks for sharing. A small camera is great for street photography, as it is not too intimidating for the subject!
I used to be in a Monochrome DD group. When I first joined, I thought I just chose a subject that would look good in BW and then press the BW button in LightRoom. After see the wonderful work done in the group, and so many people raving about NIK Silver Efex, I purchased it. WOW! Not all BW post processing is equal. I love that program. |

To me, dexterity is an activity. So while your image of your daughter is lovely, it doesn't have the dynamic quality that I associate with the concept of dexterity. Given that you chose the assignment for the month, I am curious as to what inspires you as images of dexterity. |

Hi Lisa,
I like that you cropped to the subject! I can see this image printed and framed, placed on a wall that has a narrow area for an image. Your image capture the "grace in physical activity" as well as the focus and control needed to perform like this. I flipped the image so that up is down, and down up, and it is also quite interesting. the smile on the girl's face shows such joy. Nice work! |

Hi Ally,
I play guitar so I am naturally biased towards your image! Gutar players have dexterity and fluidity. The closeup works much better than the long shot. Your crop is perfect. Great job. |

Hi Nancy,
I would like to know more about the technical aspects (camera settings and so on) and how you processed the image. It is not going to change how wonderful the image is, but it will instruct me (and others in this group) to try some new techniques.
Nice work.

Hi Connie,
I love this image. It communicates both the focus and the ability to make small movements with the hands. AND it's a Martin guitar. I used to own a Martin D28 but sold it to finance graduate school. It is one of the finest guitars and requires skilled, and dextrous, craftsmen like you've shown in this photo. The angle is very dynamic. Great job! |

Hi Carole,
Calligraphy is an amazing art. I say this as someone who failed handwriting in grammar school. When I thought of dexterity, calligraphy hadn't come to mind. But now that I see your picture, this is a wonderful "dextrous" image. While your tighter crop has some merit, I do enjoy seeing the entire message. Fabulous! |

I should clarify. This was an in-person class so his tricks and tips won't be on the web. He is a "get it right in the camera" person.
I am a bit sensitive to looking for artifacts because when I competed in my local camera club, we had a few judges who would spot these things. |

A pun? What a challenge. I asked ChatGPT to write one:
"Their love blossomed with such spark-it was more than a filament-ary connection, and he was always there to anther her every need." |

With 11,000 operational satellites circling the Earth, and an estimated 500-600 over the Mojave at any point in time, I'd have to say most are satellites. However, there are two meteor showers in July. It's been my experience that a given group of star watchers at night, a meteor is so eye catching that someone will see it and yell "OOOOO".
My husband tells me that streaks of uniform brightness indicate satellites whereas meteors start out bright and diminish as they burn up. |

Hi Harley,
Yes, the eyesight tends to change, as with me.
To check for artifacts, I zoom in. This is not as important with digital, but print will show these. I took a printing workshop recently with master printer Stephen Johnson. Over the decades he's worked with Adobe, Canon, Apple, and others to refine the tools we use. He took an hour on one of the student's photographs to track down how artifacts were generated, fixed them, and I was amazed I could see the difference. There are many tricks to get rid of what digital editing often introduces. (https://stephen-johnson-gtt1.squarespace.com) |

Hi Mark,
I'd love to get to the Faroe Islands. How did you get there? I was just at the South Shetlands and then went over to St.Kilda. Fortunately no rain. But in those parts rain and gray light is the norm. You did a good job to find some bright colors in this environment. There are many old boats that will likely never see the sea again, despite their brilliant colors. |

Hi Harley,
You made the right choice by altering the space between the daughter and mother. I think the monochrome treatment allows us to focus more on the subjects. There are some artifacts around the daughter's hands that hints towards your digital editing. |

Hi Leo,
I'd like to hear about your goals for this image. To me, my eye isn't sure where to look. I don't see a central theme. A bus, a building, a few cars? |

Hi Andrew,
The Mojave is one of my favorite places on the planet. It is also one of the few places with minimal light pollution. Your image reminds me of the time I sat in the Mojave learning to capture such images as yours. As wonderful as the stars are, it's all about capturing a foreground that complements the sky. You nailed it! You have the amazing landscape as well as the complementary colors of the sun and the blue sky. Well done! Now if only we could get rid of the ever-increasing satellites in our photos!!!! |
