Pete,
This is great! You might consider posting it on our bulletin board so your workflow if available more widely. |

That works too! Thanks.
I think I used the Fine Art Process preset in Nik Efx. What I typically do is try most of the presets, pick about 6 favorites, then go back and forth between them until I find the one that appeals to my eye the most. If I don't find any quite right, I choose the closest and then make a few adjustments. I'm finding contrast, details, range of black to white, and so on can be quite subjective. There are many options, each of which can result in a pleasing approach. What's your workflow? |

Hi Bob,
I wasn't hoping for anything. I was totally surprised to see that this huge temple had fallen out of use except for once or twice a year. The inside is actually pretty nice. In USA there would have been vandals, but I think everyone in Japan respects even the old temples. In the back of the temple are hundreds of concrete holders for candles and a few tombs. To me, it is all magical no matter what the condition.
As I told our tour guide, Japan was never on my bucket list. I went because I didn't know what I didn't know. I found the trip quite enjoyable, surprising, and enchanting. |

Hi Mandy,
Your take is interesting, but it does wash out the sky. I prefer to see the contrast in the clouds.
When you convert to BW, are you using PS or LightRoom or something like Nik Efx Pro? |

Hi Bob,
The image makes a very interesting BW abstract that is all about texture. I like it.
I also like the original image, which I think works extremely well as a sort of impressionistic painting. I adjusted the color and applied the Cezanne filter (just 30%) in Topaz Studio. What do you think? |

Nice image Mark. Pete did nail it with the sheen. I also like that he removed the contrails because my eye was drawn to them. I started thinking about how many flights were over Paris. By removing the contrails, the sky becomes a backdrop that enhances the wonderful image of the tower.
I agree with Pete about Photoshop--you never "learn" it. All you can do is get a sense of what it can do, then either consult PS help or YouTube for specific things when you need them. |

Terrific image! I love jellyfish. You brought out the structure nicely.
Thanks for the details on the workflow. I will try it next time I encounter a jellyfish. |

Bravo! Great job. You succeeded in creating a spooky image for Halloween. I love the way you were able to get the tree to stand out. |

Hi Mandy,
I do like the confusion of the birds. Whether you think there are too many birds really has to do with the story you want to tell. Frantic flocks of gulls at a fishing port typically signal a school of fish approaching the shore, or a fishing boat. Your image captures that story. I'm curious as to what's attracting the birds.
Like Mark, I thought of the Alfred Hitchcock movie. You might consider focusing on the frantic behavior of the birds by cropping the image a bit and choosing a title like "Birds Attack Essaouira!"
In any case, you did a fine job with the BW conversion. |
