Thanks for the suggestion LuAnn. The crop is a bit tight for me, but the switch of direction is interesting. I think it was a previous DD group I was in that discussed left-facing vs. right-facing. It turns out that individuals have preferences, but there are also cultural aspects that might be based on reading direction. As long as the missiles are not aimed at me, I am okay with either direction! :-) |

Thanks for your comments Bob. Indeed it is best of its class. I was fortunate to be able to see it. Now I want to go back for the special engineering tour that they offer on Saturdays. Unfortunately I was there midweek. |

Hi LuAnn,
Lovely image. Your BW version helps me to appreciate the structure and texture of the flower without the distraction of the "showy" color. Well done! I am enjoying the tight crop too. It pulls me into the image. |

Hi Mark,
I'm with LuAnn on this image. The high key version is wonderful, detailed (windows) yet with a minimalist feel. The water towers make the image. I admired the many wooden water towers on my last visit to NYC, but was unable to line up a shot due to all the other things in the way. You have succeeded! |

Hi Pete,
I love the simplicity of this image and the way the pelican and branch form a diagonal line. Wonderful composition. Well done!
My only suggestion is to widen the tonal range. Here, I expanded the white to just shy of max. I did the same with black, but without affecting the bird and the branch which are already almost at max black. |

Thank you Emil!
My husband worked at Boeing for almost 20 years, part of which was on the B1 program, but later as a calibration engineer in the Calibration lab in Kent, WA. He left just before the merger.

Hi Isreal,
I do like the fact you softened the background. I also see how it might be helpful for the person to stand out more. However, to me, I see the image as a landscape with the person as part of it.
I do have one suggestion along Pete's lines. The next time you have a model, you might experiment with having the person move around the scene until they are in front of a background that is as simple as possible. In this scene, the head and hat blend in with the building, so it is very tricky to separate them and then selectively adjust. I tried, and Photoshop Object Detection only pulled out the person from the neck down. That tells me the colors/luminosity values in the head are too close to the wood on the building. If you also captured an image with the man sitting on the ground with his back against the cement bricks, he would stand out more. What do you think? |

Very nice Israel! Your leader is a convincing model. Adding the clouds gives my eye something to look at as I scan the top of the receding mountains. The tree and its shadow add a lot of interest to the image. Sharpening the cowboy and the tree while slightly blurring the rest of the image was a good choice. I like it! |

Nicely done Emil! I've been to the Chihuly Museum many times but your image fooled me! I thought it was a close up of crystals until I read the title. Most of Chihuly's works are quite colorful, but I now remember some that are more subdued. You chose a wonderful subject. Good job removing the distracting projectiles at the top right.
You could name it "ice crystals o Mars" or some such thing!!!! |

Hi Bob,
I'm glad to see someone else enjoys capturing turkey images. My turkeys leave my property well before Thanksgiving and don't return until February.
Converting to BW certainly makes the structures on the head stand out, giving the image a wonderful texture. I like what you did, especially the close framing. The curve of the head along with the feathers make pleasing lines.
I can't suggest anything! Great job! |
