Happy New Year to you and your family Israel. Many people in California where I live, celebrate Rosh HaShanah. Several businesses will be closed on September 25 to allow for a proper celebration. Enjoy! |

Israeli,
I really like LuAnn's suggestion to make a sequence of images from this opera that can tell the story. We only get to see one wonderful image at a time in our group, but a sequence would work well in your portfolio.

LuAnn, Thanks for putting a person in here. I like it! One of the big drawbacks of images I've taken in the past is that I don't include people. After getting advice in several workshops that people add interest, I am working on getting more people in a image. But people who add artistic interest, which leaves out many people I know because they'd want to "pose." Fortunately I have a husband who has been helpful. When I travel, I now bring props--red shirt, white hat, and so forth. If I need someone to perk up the scene, I dress up my husband. LOL! |

If you can get your grandson to pose the same now, then you can clone him in and have Time Tunnel Twins! |

Israel, You are so lucky to get to take photos of this opera! Your conversion to BW is wonderful. The composition, however, is not as pleasing to me because of the large swath of dark space in the center of the image that draws my eye. There is nothing you can to about the director's staging, so it might be difficult to capture the entire scene and make a balanced composition.
Looking at the characters, I think you have an opportunity to showcase one or two of the singers. The two men next to each other have interesting lighting, and you are in a good position to highlight them. The larger person on the right (the King?) would be another interesting character study if you would have been able to position yourself more in front of him. Given this image, I suggest a radical crop and then putting a bit more light the face of the man on the left. What do you think? |

I have no idea. I didn't feel I could ask him to take off his hat. I did a separate shot of just his hands on his scooter. I was trying to figure out how the rings, the tatoos, and the piercings all fit together, but no luck. He lists himself as a "Cannabis Professional" on his FB page! |

I love the asymmetry of this image. Your grandson is a great subject! My only suggestion is to clone out at least the first 4 posts, if not all of them. To my eye, that would make it more of a mystery of where he is. Although I admit that I had no idea that this was a tunnel in the National Gallery of Art.
And for something completely different, I made symmetrical version, just for fun! |

WOW! I love this image. The color version is wonderful too. It's the "happy" version. In BW, the flowers take on lovely textures and give the composition a more subdued feeling. Perhaps this is what happens to us flower power people when we age!!!
My only suggestion is that I prefer the original crop, where there is more space to the sides. |

Emil, This is a lovely image. I especially like the brick wall and the curving path. I suggest that if you return, you photograph someone walking down the path. For me, that would make my eye want to head down the path with you! |

Hi LuAnn, I love the texture of the shuttlecock. Because of it, I first thought it was a metal basket. The shadow is terrific. You might want to experiment with making it darker, as Pete did. To my eye, the image is a bit soft. However, that doesn't bother me because your composition seems old. You might capitalize on that by adding more grain and making a version in sepia. Or perhaps you tried that?
Nice job! Your images are always inspiring. |
