To make the bird stand out from the water you could try de-constrasting the water and add some clarity to the bird
You could also crop out a lot of the corner post and leave him the rope to stand on
He does look comical with that ball of hair on his head

I think you have the beginnings of a project here. The single image on its on is quite unremarkable but as a panel or a body of work this could be an interesting angle

A great opportunity Piers which i think you made the most of. I wonder how a sepia image would work, given the subject?
The background in you edited version is better than the original but i think you need to lose some of the clarity and sharpness from the additional foilage. It is too in focus compared to what was there before.

Focus stacking is a great technique to master - sadly I haven't!
I like your technical exercise and it will give you some confidence to try it on your own? The log severed as a good guinea pig.
I prefer the saturation of the leaves in your edited version
