You have got to see this museum to understand that the location of this piece naturally fits in. For example, in the basement is a piece that appeals to my six-year-old grandson--a farting machine. You push the button and hear any one of about 25 farts, and in the museum shop are half a dozen books titled, "Farts".
Yes, this image does remind one of a spinning black hole. Had the recent news of the radio image of a black hole come earlier, I think a better title would have been "Spinning Black Hole" or "In and Never Out", or "Center of the Galaxy". |

Perhaps our preference for left-to-right results from the way we read and write. |

It looks like there may still be some technical issues. The image is only 480 x 480. The leaves are a pretty amazing red color and such a delight to see after the winter. I think the image might be improved if the leaves constituted more of the image and if the leaves could have been in sharp focus, but the bark not in sharp focus. |

I agree, that it feels more natural for the stream to enter the image on the left. The stumps in the back all seem tipped to the left, which makes me feel a little uneasy since trees try to grow vertically. |

I like the silhouette against the water. I agree with Judy and Dorinda that the image feels better with some cropping from the top. My crop point is at the beginning of the third variety of waves. I think the image could also be improved by brightening the ground at the bottom. As one might guess from my comments on Leonid's image, I'm not so fond of Judy's relocation of the bird or of Leonid's coloring and beam of light. |

I agree with your points about an image not needing to represent reality and that an image can result from the photographer's imagination. I'm sorry for the confusion. I'll try to explain. To me, images that are of real subjects or that appear to be real subjects have greater appeal than images that are clearly unreal. (One might legitimately ask then, why then did I submit an image this month that is so clearly unreal? I have no answer for this.) I am afraid that my general preference for the appearance of reality has been amplified by a lifetime of doing science, where one must look very carefully at the veracity of data. I appreciate the fact that my taste in images is somewhat extreme and not widely shared. In the case of this image, I love the colors and the idea, but I'm made uneasy by its internal contradictions. |

The rainfall depicted here is like a torrent from a fire hose, approximately 2,000 inches per hour. This comes from estimating that about 700 drops are shown here in a volume 6" wide, 6" high, and 12" deep, that the volume of a drop is about 0.002 cubic inches, and that the drops are falling at about 15 mph.
I like the aqua blue stripe behind the flower, but not so much the aqua blue edges on the stem. |

I like the effect of your new cropping. I hadn't realized before that the multiple stumps near the top didn't contribute much to the image. |

What fantastic colors and a great idea. I think the image would be improved if the bee were not present, as I don't think that bees forage in the rain. To me, it would also improve things if the water drops on the flower petals and the raindrops were more realistic. |

Wow, an almost perfect rainbow, and just as the sun is setting-a rare occurrence. How fortunate that you have the habit of having your camera with you most of the time. To me, the image would be nicer if the secondary rainbow, which lies outside the first and which is barely visible in the two upper corners, had also been enhanced. |

B&W feels like the right choice for this image. Both the stumps and the small meandering stream attract my interest. I think the shot might be better if either the stream or the stumps, but not both, had greater prominence. Taking the shot from closer to the first stump, perhaps with a wider lens would enlarge the closest stump relative to the others. Also, this might be an image where strong vignetting would be attractive. |
