Bill,
It sounds as if you like the DD format better than SG. I was in a slide study group eons ago and we had to mail the package so it didn't get around much during the year.Plus we could read others' comments before making our own and it was hard not to look!
It's good they are starting a street group. I remember a while back asking John Larson if there were any street groups in PJ, but there weren't any. My club has had an online discussion about street photography. Some ask permission and some don't. I do try to listen to valerie Jardin's street podcast; she is very good. |

Tours, especially photo tours, present problems with meeting the Photo travel definition in PSA. It is often hard to tell if there has been manipulation, but so many similar pictures are entered in competition because people have been told where to stand! I was furious last year when a picture of swans was given a medal in an Exhibition in Wales. Some think if you travel you know what a travel image is, but not with our definition. Such is life. |

I like the horizontal crop. As so many have said--the best time to take a vertical is just after the horizontal and that can go either way. People shoot videos vertically with phones, but often don't think to take vertical pictures with cameras. |

Stephan,
I just read your bio since you said you lived in a remote area. Bora Bora--I have always dreamt of seeing it, but it won't happen. I just saw a list of places around the world that people should see and Bora Bora was on the list! I hope you'll submit some images from there so we can see it from a personal perspective.

Karen,
How did you darken the bright area? I always make a mess when I try! |

Karen,
Thanks for the info on the cranes. We'll try to include that on our trip and I may take my Nikon gear since we have room. It depends on how far I have to walk. have you ever photographed them? As a nature expert, you probably have. How long a lens did you use?

Thanks for the link, Bob. I do use that feature in PSE but obviously need more practice! For some images, I find the rotate works better. Of course, we all have to remember to allow room for straightening when we shoot buildings! I often forget and of course with film, we got what we got unless we had a PC lens. I can't justify that now. I do have a cheap Bower fish-eye for my Olympus and it does have some adjustments for such situations. I was also playing with a Platypod I got for low angle shots and it will take some getting used to! Problem is getting up from the floor:-). |

You have a point about using a wide angle lens, but the Olympus lenses have a 2X crop factor so it was shot at 24mm not 12. I took a lot of pictures there since it was a workshop. Of course, people were in some images and if they were in the way, I didn't use them.
I am attaching a photo I took with a fish-eye lens handheld because I stupidly forgot my tripod on a field trip to Baltimore. I did a little correction with NX capture. It did well in color and mono and is now retired. I don't use my Nikon equipment much anymore due to weight. |

Karen,
You are right about the slant, but I use Elements and just used the lens adjustment. I do have a keystone setting on one of my cameras, but may not have used it here. You are the expert processor so I always appreciate your comments. You did a great job correcting my image and i wish I could do it. I'll have to check and see if there is another way to correct it.
Where is the best place to photograph the sandhill cranes along the Platte? I just found an article on them in an old magazine. We plan to drive to Nevada next March and that sounds like a good time for the birds.

Bob,
I bought the new NIK when it was on sale and I can get support with that. I am so used to using it, I didn't want to lose it. I also have the Topaz plugins, but need to learn more about how to use them.
A friend did posters of lighthouses in MD and DE. She moved to Maine, but gets back every year. We keep missing her when she is here.:-( |

Is the new group in DD or a study group? I administer group 31 in the Study Group section. It operates differently from this one. We do 2 images a month and also provide feedback. When I was looking for a monochrome group, Barbara was going to take me out of this group which I did not want to do. That is why I went for the study group.
Bill, I am sure you took many pictures with such an opportunity. |

Good seeing, Bill and good for your patience. I would like the figure more to the left--between the 2 columns. Three columns is the "rule" but you could crop the left one so the figure would not be so centered. I do like it as a monochrome with all the lines and shadows. |

This is well composed and the people on the bridge certainly add a lot to the composition/ I think it lacks contrast so I added some and also lowered the exposure. You might crop the bottom or clone out some of the white spots along the bottom. |

You have more patience than I do--plan ahead and wait. That is something I have to work on. Color is great and waiting was worthwhile. Getting the figures in really makes the picture. I would crop the top to eliminate the bright area so it is more like the bottom. I think that would hold the picture together better. Well done! |

Welcome aboard. This is a great group and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.
You did well for a mid-day shot with harsh lighting. Adding the shadows was a good idea. The overly bright background hurts the image for me. The pose is well done and the dress color is great. |

Nice composition. I had to look for the haystack (didn't find a needle!) I have a technical question about the bright area of the sky--this often happens to me and I don't know what causes it. It looks like it has a greenish tinge (could be my eyes!) Anyway, I find it a bit distracting. My brother would love this as he is into lighthouses. How do you like Topaz Studio? I have the plug-ins but not the complete program. |
