You sure made the most of your wine trip! This is a challenging shot to get with the lighting conditions. I tried processing it 2 ways as it is fun to play with others' photos. The first I did in Color Efex Pro with the presets lighten edges and detail extractor. I also cropped a bit of the dark part on the right side. The second one, I did in Topaz Adjust and I think the preset was mild photo pop. I also dodged some of the darker areas. You did very well under the conditions. |

First congratulations on all your acceptances in a recent exhibition--I can't remember which one, but saw your name a lot! Venice is a photographer's dream, but you are right about getting lost! I like that you show a different side of Venice than we usually see--water with a gondola. The colors are lovely. Since the sides are both very dark, I suggest cropping both a bit and also removing some of the white spots on the walkway unless you enter it in Photo Travel--then you can't. Maybe you can do a photo travel essay on Venice or of some other place you have been for PTD essay competition. |

Good for you taking advantage of an opportunity instead of staying inside--which I probably would have done:-). I really like the 3 branches and the way they hang. I tried 2 different ways of editing, but guess there is no way to show both. The nitpicking comments are the out of focus area at the top which detracts from the perfection of the rest of the branches. I cloned it out on both my edits. The other thing that I found a bit distracting is the bright blue at the bottom and the different color on the upper left corner and the right side. I cropped it to remove the area on the left since that was darker and had more contrast. I am not very good at fixing backgrounds and tried using healing and cloning but that made it worse! I also selected the branches and then made the background all the same color and didn't like that either! I do like that all the background is so blurred and that helps in any situation. All in all, I think it is a lovely image and wish I had done it. |

One of my favorite places! We were lucky to have a guide with a Chevy truck--much better than a Jeep for me. We were down for about 2 hours and I shot everything hand held. Good for you being more serious about your work! I think the shadow areas need to be lighter so I did that in Viveza and the one bright line about in the middle draws me away from everything else so I used the healing brush to get rid of it. I think the Canyon is very suitable for monochrome and I did a travel essay in monochrome a few years ago when we still had categories in PTD essay competition and it did well. It is always worth trying monochrome since we often find that it looks as good or better that way..and there is always PID-M! |
