14 Jan 26 Reply Hi Ingrid - Thank you for your thoughts - In a recent review of my archives, the lighting on the wall and arch is what drew me to this image. Monument Lake Resort is a hidden gem about 3.5 hours south of Denver and just west of Trinidad. The whole Highway of Legends (a National Scenic Byway) area between La Veta and Weston where Monument Lake Resort is located is well worth the visit. Jan 18th
14 Jan 26 Comment Hi Kamal - It's so fortunate that you've had the opportunity to attend some of the international PSA photo gatherings! You've handled the complicated lighting and color balance in this image beautifully. I would remove the bright yellow spot on the right side middle of the stairs - a small thing really, although my eye keeps wandering toward it. I agree that the people on the stairs effectively adds scale to the image. Nicely done! Jan 15th
14 Jan 26 Comment Hi Tom - What a striking capture! I have had the opportunity to join a Humpback whale watching cruise off Hawaii. While still impressive, was not as fortunate to see full breaches of this magnitude much less capture them on camera. Your choice to shoot wide is a nice tip. I like that the eye is so visible, how sharp the image is and it's amazing how close it appears you were to your subject. The white and black of the whale contrasts nicely against the deep blue and splash of the water. The white of the fin on the left may be a bit overexposed - a small thing really given shooting conditions. The texture of the whale shows off the underbelly and those nodules you mentioned. How exciting that must have been and to have so many keepers too!! Jan 15th
14 Jan 26 Comment Hi Greg - What a great shot of this heron in its habitat! Your decisions in processing are spot on. I particularly like that the eye is so striking and you were able to bring out the texture in those feathers so nicely. Removing that stick was a good suggestion and I agree with your decision to flip the image. Nicely done! Jan 15th

14 Jan 26 Reply Hi Tom - I understand how your suggestion would work to improve the overall composition. The image could be cropped on the right up to the outer limbs of the large tree, although I'm not sure that moves the image enough to the right to get it to the lower right third of the frame and create the interest you're looking for . . . although perhaps better than dead center. I have plenty of room on the left to make your suggestion happen although that portion of the landscape is rather unappealing and I don't believe would enhance the image. It's why I cropped the image to an almost 1:1 aspect ratio and while not the most ideal, placed the archway in the center/lower third of the frame. Your insights are always quite helpful and much appreciated! Thanks - Jan 15th
14 Jan 26 Comment Hi Karen - What a unique opportunity shot you've captured. I have not had a chance to visit this memorial although the iconic statue and story are well known. While the main subject is the statue, the angle draws me into the partially obscured view of the larger, more dramatic memorial, especially with the wind capturing the waving flag in the background. There is a bit of mystery that has been created by the depth of field. I might have toned down the yellows and upped the greens slightly for better contrast, although that's reaching some for a critique. Thanks for sharing! Jan 15th
14 Jan 26 Comment Hi Ingrid - A beautiful image of Colorado mountain rangeland. Maybe it's because I live in this country - but what an amazing feeling this image invokes. A lovely composition with the valley drawing my eye in. The cloud's configuration is offset nicely by the blue of the sky and their lighting is balanced by the dusting of snow. What a wonderful view you have right around the corner from your home! I wouldn't change a thing. Jan 15th
