Hi Will,
I love this image - I love the feeling of being lifted up and away. It is so simple and dramatic and there is an amazing amount of tone variation in the arch. Very well done. |

Hi Dale,
A lovely, slightly mysterious scene! I like it in monochrome as it evokes the feel of an evening walk. I agree that there is more that can be done to emphasize the path. I like the version Chan offered - minimal changes, but the viewer's eye is directed more effectively to the trail.

Steven, you have done a very successful job of compositing! If you hadn't mentioned it was a composite, I would have assumed it was a single image. Since you did mention it, I began looking very closely for things that might have told me that and it does look like the light may be coming from different directions in the two photos. The sun seems to be to the right of the guide, while in the background the shadows seem to suggest that the light is coming from the left. Mostly it's the shadow of the stone wall behind the guide that makes me wonder. It's very subtle, and maybe I'm imagining things. |

Hi Chan,
I, too, remember this image and I agree with Steven - I like it both ways. I do like what you did to soften the vignette. To me it looks like the boy is walking into a fantastic scene, but he is distracted by whatever is in his hands. I can imagine him looking up and being overcome with awe at his surroundings. It feels like you observed him in the brief moment before this happens. |

Lance, I love learning about Yugen, Rasa and other esthetic ideas that you show us in your images - thank you! This one does exude a sense of mystery. The unfocused foreground branches makes me feel like I am standing in a hidden spot while observing the sky. The slightly less than full phase of the moon adds to the sense of mystery, as does the sharp detail of the upper edge of the moon, which makes me want to see more of it. Great image! |

Hi Steven,
I was so torn between reflections and moss - I have images of both, but overall I really loved the moss more.
I am really enjoying the Olympus. It is so much lighter and the images are pretty sharp. It can also do a lot of stuff like double exposures and focus stacking that I can't do with the Sony. And pro-capture (it should be called pre-capture) which is great for moving subjects since it saves images from before you press the shutter. The Sony images are better, since it is full frame and higher megapixels, but I can do a lot with Olympus images in post-processing. Olympus is so much easier to handle and travel with. I just upgraded to the new OM 1 Mark II, so now have 2 olympus bodies, which is great for photo workshops where I don't want to be changing lenses in the field. I may sell my Sony body and lenses if the new model is as good as I think it will be! |

Thanks Chan! There were a number of people fishing in the bayous - the area is very popular for lots of recreational activities. Yes, the trunk and the reflection are both interesting. |

Such a lovely covered bridge! My first guess would have been Japan, but Switzerland makes perfect sense. I love that people are visible crossing the bridge. The shift in focus is interesting - the flowers that are in sharp focus lets the viewer know what the flowers on the bridge itself look like, yet the overall feeling is dreamy and a little mysterious. I definitely get the feeling of someplace far away. |

Hi Cindy! Thanks for your comments. I think the muting of the background was a natural effect. I was so glad you noticed the pathish area to the right of the tree - my favorite part of the image. If I could go back there I would definitely recompose to emphasize that more, but at the time I was focused on the tree itself. It was an interesting place to photograph. |
