Thanks, Chan! I appreciate your comments.
I just had a chance to read your bio - ten years of wedding photography - I'm impressed! I shot one wedding for a friend, but found the stress more than I could handle. I decided to confine my photography to things that couldn't talk back. Actually my friends said nice things, but I couldn't deal with my own self-criticism and feelings that I could have done better.
Now I am still trying to do better and I welcome critiques from others to help me improve. And there is no one to let down other than myself.
I'm glad you joined the group and I look forward to your helpful comments in the months to come! |

Hi Mike!
I like your leaf abstract, sun spots included. My eye does go down to them, but then gets pulled back up by the strong central line and the variation the back light makes on the repetitive pattern of the leaf. I like the second one you posted even more, especially because of the interesting shadows and the lighter tones! |

Hi Steven!
I can almost feel the fuzzy texture of the leaf! I like your idea of using a flashlight to back-light the leaf. I am trying to set up a little macro studio this month with a piece of black velvet for a backdrop, but your solution is even simpler and the results are stunning! |

Welcome to the group, Chan! I really like how you chose to frame the leaves - it gives context while providing us with a single leaf to examine closely. And I think it makes for a nicely balanced composition. The blurred background is very nice. You might try darkening the very bright area at the bottom center just a bit so that it doesn't draw the eye away from the leaf. |

I'm glad you posted the second photo - it really put the first one into perspective. Alone, it looked almost as if you had stuck two leaves into the sand.
The back lighting is wonderful! I agree with Steven about the sand grains. I didn't notice them at first, but after having my attention drawn to them I can't unsee them. The extremely shallow depth of field in the sand, and the way the sun beams point to the leaves like a spotlight really draws my eye to the leaves. |

I tried other versions, but ended up with one much like Steven's. Just focusing on the drops didn't work either. I realize why I never did anything with these shots. Here is what I got: |
