11 Jul 20 Comment Good day, Henry!

As it relates to the light and shadow - I love this photograph! Like Allen notes, you created an engaging scene from out of the ordinary or common place. Well done!

11 Jul 20 Comment Hello, Jim. A lovely Landscape! Some notes:

Well, I like the original crop - it feels more "open", or "free" compared to the 2nd and final BW versions. Next, the final version seems too "structured", thus making details flow into one another. Alternatively, I would love you to work up from the original capture (frame) and leave off presets and such. "Points to Ponder".

32 Jul 20 Comment Hello, Tom. First, the entire scene is terrific! great find and composition, indeed!!

well, I feel a bit different about the overall aesthetic: I would have not processed the original as an HDR; I feel the authenticity is lost and the extreme "structured" details are over powering between the sky and main subject.

Would love to see an alternative version where you use the same strong contrasts, but with less of a structured aesthetic. "Points to Ponder".

74 Jul 20 Comment Another lovely well composed Landscape (seascape). Great work, David. Jul 26th
74 Jul 20 Comment Yes, this really is a terrific balanced composition! What is refreshing, you did not over process it...it still presents a real aesthetic as opposed to ones with heavy "structure" is is so, so inviting to do. Love it! Hope you plan to Matte & Frame this piece.

(Note I seldom comment on the color version unless it is very clear the color version creates the most drama and emotion in a photograph: I feel it is irrelevant to general discussion involving BW photography - a practice from film days - as a color version is not available to compare. This is an interesting and diverse subject for future consideration, indeed).

74 Jul 20 Comment Good day, Ying. (I am visiting from Group-83). The BW conversion is engaging, indeed. However, must agree with the some of the others about the strong contrast between the body, eyes, snout and ears: Their brightness is OK, but I suggest...very gently, increasing the exposure of the body and horns. If have a Dodge & Burn Tool (like the one in PSCC) use it with low percentage (i.e. 6%) and lighten those areas slowly.

Overall, this is well executed composition. :)

74 Jul 20 Reply Yes, the blue boat spoiled the party, as it were - however, you did a grand job cropping and composing this lovely image. Jul 26th

83 Jul 20 Reply ...fabulous detail in this shot, Jose. Jul 22nd
83 Jul 20 Comment And while we are on the subject of capturing Race Cars at speed - here is one from the 2015 24 Hours of Daytona - absolutely love attending this race every year!

Tech: ISO-100; 200mm (Shutter Priority Mode) set at 1/400sec.
(Shot was panned from right to left) And here....No flame as in this part of the track the drivers up-shift as they exit this corner.

This can be a very interesting subject for the Bulletin Board: type of lens used, camera settings, panning - the same tools and techniques used to capture other Sport related events.

83 Jul 20 Reply Hello, Jose!

Yes, the frame must go - most definitely agree with you all.

What is the Hidden Beauty within the swamp - this swamp?"

What is "Hidden Beauty"?

The "Hidden Beauty" is found in the irregularity within this scene: we are attracted to the scene because of it. The very "faults" of these seemingly ill-fated, wilted trees "prick" our senses - and thus invite the viewer to take a longer look - or better, come back for a second look.

Thank you, Jose.

83 Jul 20 Reply Hi Georgianne! Really appreciate your comments and insights; in fact, the trees are leaning, not the camera.

I agree - the dark (film negative) border is too much - I will be sure to change this before Printing this fall or in the spring of 2021.

But I am very happy to hear you have been motivated to search deeper into these types of subjects and explore the more hidden beauty and/or intrigue that surrounds our space. We all look forward to seeing examples, Georgianne! Thank you!

83 Jul 20 Comment "Eye" see you!

Well captured, Jose.

83 Jul 20 Comment Great eye, Georgianne! Nicely composed creating an intriguing abstract.

The Black and White version is terrific and perhaps applying a different Color filter during post production may change the gray-scale tone range to better enhance the degree of Depth Judy speaks about.

83 Jul 20 Comment I love Sports Car Racing!

I can hear the downshifting Pop! from the exhaust as the driver negotiates this turn...

83 Jul 20 Reply My pleasure - and as you suggested to me, I will begin a Topic on the subject on the Bulletin Board. Thank you, Judy. Jul 9th
83 Jul 20 Comment Hi Judy...You have captured Therese's determination, strength and apparent steadfastness as she runs past you - the BW version is outstanding! I like the "space" open on the right to show direction - very important...and I like seeing details behind her. Well done!

Kudos to you, Judy - it is so wonderful that you give support to these amazing groups and the people they represent. I too, was very involved with the 24 Hours of Booty campaign/organization for many years in helping a similar cause - it brings the needed education, funds and Hope to those battling this disease and their families.

83 Jul 20 Reply And in this case - your example - is a completely different composition, one likely more common, as you suggested.

Debasish version is creative - and offers an unusual perspective that I keep looking at...because of its "out of box"keeps me engaged.

Jennifer included new examples, too!

Thank you, everyone!

87 Jul 20 Reply NOTES:
Dale, your shot is very good! The particular aperture used resulted in a particular composition - which works fine and is enjoyable to view - it would likely print fine, too.

Choosing a smaller F/sop for more Bokeh around the point of focus would create yet another alternative aesthetic, but not necessarily better, just different. One is not more artistic than the other, just different.

I tend to shoot a lot of "wide open" apertures, as this is my Style - not exclusively, but in most cases. However, when the subject calls for showing detail in the background, (like your example) I close up the lens a bit: remember to "bracket" exposures to cover all possible Exposure and Artistic possibilities - after the film is developed or looking at digital images on screen, you can choose the best frames.

87 Jul 20 Reply Dale,

Really happy you are enjoying this conversation on BW photography: yes, many images look better in Monochrome, but that said, there are others that (scream!) to be in color.

It is sometimes very difficult to choose between the two in the Digital Photography age, as we first see the color rendering and then need to convert to BW, unless of course the photographer is shooting BW film.

In any case, for a large scope of subjects, the BW rendering allows the viewer to immediately take in the "whole" composition, more often than not, resulting in a more dramatic and emotional response - regardless if the viewer likes or dislikes the presentation or subject matter.

87 Jul 20 Reply Appreciate your thoughts, Steven.

Yes, sometimes just a small slice of reality can reveal beauty or intrigue. It was the largest tree that caught my attention - the other trees and bush were like a small Island among the vast grassland. Thank you, Steven.

Jennifer, and anyone else interested, I placed two photos and descriptions on the Bulletin Board. Feel free to reach out to me with questions.

87 Jul 20 Reply These are very valid points on creating compositional structure,...thank you for sharing, Chan. Jul 2nd
87 Jul 20 Reply Yes, this particular composition is a good example of BW being able to connect to the viewer more completely. I am happy you like it - thank you!

Yes, I will share how I create my custom toning, shortly. I will attempt to attached a screen shot of my procedure.

Jul 2nd
87 Jul 20 Reply Indeed, traditionally, collectors of photography look for engaging BW compositions far more than their color alternatives.

Really appreciate your comments. Thank you, Chan.

87 Jul 20 Comment Hi Graham! Yes, an interesting modification to make the scene "dreamy" without using an alternative "layer" or other algorithms found on an array of software programs.

However, for me, I think I like the Original aesthetic. It appears already soft, likely the result of a 73sec exposure, indeed. From this point, you could possible convert to BW which may increase the "dreamy" appeal you are after - maybe not.

In any case, the color original reflects a more authentic, and in my opinion, the better composition.

The Abstract is very cool! I love the colors!! and talk about dreamy....well done!

87 Jul 20 Comment Jennifer...this is a wonderful composition!

Frankly, I would not change a thing. The aesthetic is very pleasing, natural and authentic.

Great eye to see this through your viewfinder! Very impressed with the final version! Well done!

Get with a good printer and decide what paper this needs to be printed on....

87 Jul 20 Comment Wow! What a great capture! 1/3200sec...nice!

I know this is a early morning shot and the sunrise color is warm and inviting...but you know I would also like this as a BW rendering. In any case, well done!
Jul 2nd
87 Jul 20 Comment Chan, the crop is nice....I like you decided to place the subject off-center. The vine and surrounding trees, bushes and water make a fine composition - good eye to get this done!

This is another photograph I would likely convert to Black & White - as everyone knows I love BW. But by all means, this is lovely in color! Well done!

87 Jul 20 Comment Gee, what a lovely portrait, Jo! Lighting is suburb! Jul 2nd
87 Jul 20 Comment Hello, Dale, really liking this spring-summer floral composition: I always enjoy like perspectives from the top, looking down.

The F/6.3 gives you a relatively deep (Dof) thus keeping artifacts in the background relevant and adding to the composition. Alternatively, you could have dialed in a more open aperture (i.e. F/2.5) and created more Bokeh or blur surrounding the subject. This composition looks fine as it is, however.

Loving BW photography...I took the liberty to re-crop a little and then convert to BW via Silver Efex Pro-2. I placed it through an orange filter and custom copper-silver toning. Lastly, I created this a frame to replicate what it might look like on the wall.
