I finally played around with this, added a mat and frame per your suggestion (as an example). The feather still needs to be sharper as Judy recommended. |

Yes. This is much better. Now my eye is directed to the fence/ tree line and beyond. |

Your image does demonstrate the colors resulting from the intense fires of a few months ago. I recognized the colors immediately. It puts a strange cast over everything in sight. |

Gavin's videos are just ones I am familiar with. I'm sure there are many others. And, as you suggested, spend some time studying others and try to figure out what you like and what you dislike about them. I played with various crops of your image. At first I tried to retain the bent tree on the left, but could not get it to work for me. in the crop I am sharing, I have cropped in quite a bit, but by doing so, I think it brings the pathway into the photo instead of just something along the edge. Questions to consider: What is your subject? What is superfluous to the scene and should be left out. What are the supporting characters (Gavin's term) which can be left in, but are of lessor importance and should not take away from the subject. Finally, be sure to walk around and check your view, even if just a couple feet to the left, right, etc. A short distance can completely change your image. Finally, promise your wife a nice cup of coffee and donut, if she will just wait, one more minute! :-) |

First, this is exactly the color of our "world" here in the PNW last September, due to the wildfires in CA and OR. It immediately took me back... For me, most of the interest is in the foreground. I wonder if it would be improved by cropping half of the sky out? I do also like the bw, but having experienced these smoky skies, I kind of like it in color and am glad you did not try to adjust the wb. |

I enjoy the colors and lighting. I do struggle with the composition. I am drawn to the left/center part of the image and then right to the distant end of the path and out of the frame. Recently my husband and I have been watching some videos by Gavin Hardcastle. www.fototripper.com He talks about how to select your composition when shooting landscape photos. |

What a coincidence..... a friend just referred me to Harold Davis' website and I have started trying some images using a lightbox. I think you did well with this, Judy. The flower is sharp and well lit, not easy to do with a flower with as many petals as a carnation has.

I agree with the earlier comments I cropped it to a 4x6 crop just enough to draw more attention (I think) to the central leaves. I also cloned out some of the leaf defects, but not all, as they are a part of the story. |

I'm not good at masking, but probably should use this as a practice image. That way the feather would probably be sharper.
