40 Jan 21 Comment wow, Julie, that Topaz denoise works wonders! Thank you so much for doing that!
I completely forgot I had an extender (so much goes out of one's head when one moves). I'm going to try to get the three planets that are close together now, using the same methods as above but with an extender. We will see how it goes!

40 Jan 21 Reply I like this one very much. I can't believe you got all that from one skyline image! Jan 10th
40 Jan 21 Comment The Christmas card idea is a marvelous idea. (I used some of my Santa pictures for our Christmas card). I love the idea of supplying one's own background, as Henry did in his milkweed picture too.
This should have worked, but for some reason for me it falls short. I love the concept and the background like I said. I think what doesn't work for me is that the berries that are not in focus are not out of focus enough. Also they are on the same plane as the berries that are - or close to it.
I would suggest trying again but angling the branch front to back instead of horizontally across.

40 Jan 21 Comment It's beautiful and peaceful. It has some of the qualities of your landscapes, which I often find restful and meditative.
For my taste, it is still a little dark. I would suggest playing with the blacks and whites, highlights and shadows.
There are several people doing minimalist/abstract work in the group now - you might want to go through the comments on those pictures.
For me the strongest appeal in this picture is the tactility of the border between edge of the leaves and the surface of the water. I fear that if you raise the exposure that will be lost. That is why I suggest looking more at the balance between light and dark, etc. I would love to see what you would do if you took a similar picture now.

40 Jan 21 Comment Dear Henry,
This is a marvelous "quarantine" project. Those 100mm lenses really are good for macro, aren't they? I have an 85 mm so I've hesitated to get a 100 - I thought they would be too similar in range. I had to look up what mirror lockup was.
I think your framing is brilliant, and reminds us of the bees and butterflies that like to feed on this plant.
The way the image is lit is good, but I think you might have gone a little far with the texture slider or perhaps the dehaze or clarity. The original clearly needs a little of that, but the final seems to have a little too much.
You could definitely put this on your wall, after a little more slide work (or a little undoing of the slider work).
I'd love to see you take pictures of the same plant through the seasons so that you have a series.

40 Jan 21 Comment Hi Andrew,
I had to look up what a punt was (in American English the word "punt" has something to do with kicking a football), and then remembered I'd been on one the one and only time I was able to visit Cambridge University. I insisted the friend that was showing me around take me out on a punt, because I'd seen Brideshead and similar TV series, so it seemed the thing to do.
I would like to see the original that you cropped.
My thoughts on this version: Yes, there is the beauty of line - you captured that.
But minimalist pictures are about mass and texture too. For the viewer to focus on the composition and the line, we have to either not be able to tell what it is and not care (so, crop in further) or know immediately what it is and not think about that and focus on the beauty of line, the balance of mass, the tactility of the textures. Maybe because I'm American, I didn't realize what the punts were, even when you told us what they were. For me, a tighther shot that focused on the textures as well as the line would work better (the covered part of the punts on the right seems to have glare on it, which I find distracting). Or a wider shot that is still mostly about texture but enables me to figure out what it is, so that the mystery of what it is doesn't distract me from enjoying the minimalist aspects of the image.
I would love to see you take some minimalist pictures now.

40 Jan 21 Comment This is very powerful. The texture adjustment works well. I could see it blown up big and hung on a wall. The contrast between the mass of the tower and the depth of the sky with the distant cloud bank really speaks to me. Very calming, which is a really good thing right now! Jan 8th
40 Jan 21 Comment That was a great video! He made it look so easy... I am sure it is not!
I love your picture. I can see from his and your example that having one building or other landmark that stands out adds to the overall effect. I like the purple in yours. I do wonder what it would have looked like with a blue sky.
I am inspired to try to make some good skyline shots of Manchester, NH (a challenge in and of itself as it really doesn't have a distinguished skyline) and then try this effect! Very inspiring!
