I see. I thought you meant the zig zags on the left.
I don't compete (yet) so I'm not so familiar with competition rules.
I do think your crop helps the image.I might even have cropped a little more, as close as you can get to the flags without cropping them.
My feeling is that a slightly more cropped would emphasize the relationship between the figure in white, which is where the eye goes first, and the darker figure.

I think the zig zags would have to be clones out. If he were to crop then he would cut the prow of the boat which would unbalance the image, IMHO. |

I also wonder how this would look in B&W. |

Dear Andrew, I live in Florida so it was a sunset shoot. We got lost so we got there a little late, still with daylight but the sun setting fast. I hope to get a chance to do a balloon shoot again, this was the first ever for my area but if they come back next year I will be better prepared! Thanks for all the tips.

Prakhar thanks for the feedback. There were so many balloons going up that I became overwhelmed, trying to catch something of everything, I never even put the camera on the tripod. If I had more than one camera maybe I could have done that, a combination of tripod work and running around doing handheld, though I'm not experienced enough for something that compleax.
I do prefer the image without the gradient. I see what you mean about the contrast, I'll go back to the original and try that.

What kind of lens did you use to get that close? I took some close up pictures in a butterfly garden last month. On my canon 5D Mark III I had the 50mm portrait lens, then I attached a macro lens. Unfortunately the camera is a full frame and that macro lens, which I got in a cheap little kit I saw online and bought on impulse, is not, so the original images had vignetting in the corners which I cropped out. That was my first attempt at close up work. I felt the attempt was unsuccessful, but I did use the images to make this digital birthday card to post on Facebook when my friends have birthdays. |

This is the kind of foto that requires long contemplation. You can't take it in at a glance. When it first came up on my phone all I could really make out was the blue tarp from the boat, which seemed to dominate the picture at that scale.
Later at home I studied it on a larger computer screen. From the blue tarp my eye traveled to the man in white clothes, up the white brick on the steps at the left, to the light colored blue shirt, and across to the big white graffiti.
I didn't even notice the man in dark clothes in the center of the frame until the third time I studied the image. Now I think that is what the picture is about, the relationship between the darker figure and the figure in white.
The picture rewards long contemplation because of the wealth of textures.
The pictures also tells a story about being on a wharf, the water we don't see in the picture is a structuring absence.
Wonderful image that rewards careful study. |

I love this. I need to learn how to do this. Could you explain the step by step a little more? I love the way the final result looks like a painting. |

The way this is shot gives the building personality. It looms over us, the flare gleams, like it was some kind of powerful being. By contrast the light color and delicate decorations are a contrast to that initial impression.
So would you consider this street photography or landscape photography? |

Every change you made was for the better. Your final image shows more detail of botanical interest. I loved the reflector idea, I will have to try that. Did you use something like a lensbaby? I've heard of those but never tried one. |

I'd never been to a baloon glow before. I read several articles on what to do. Most articles said bring a tripod, except for one. I got there, set up my tripod, and then found things were happening way too fast for me to use it, which meant that once I got a lot of interesting shots of the flames (and breathed in enough of the fumes to trigger my COPD). This was the first time ever there was a baloon glow in my area. If there is one near you, get there! Don't bother with long lenses, go wide, use a monopod over a tripod (I wish I'd done that).
I wanted to go on a ride but those were sold out, so sorry I have no pictures from the air.

Wow! Like Andrew's picture last month, I envy you the perfect capture of the motion.
It's too bad the surfer was making such a weird face.
Really intiguing the way the water is half green and half blue.I love the way the green on his board matches the water.
I assume you were on a tripod? Did a burst?
