It does appear we only have four members now. Interest in PSA seems to be waning with younger USA folks. Too small a presence on social media. People just seem to want to get their awards and leave. |

Thanks, Joan. It isn't a pretty image, but it did tweak my interest. It is not the sunrise/sunset image that draws in visitors. It does appear we only have four members now. Interest in PSA seems to be waning with younger USA folks. Too small a presence on social media. People just seem to want to get their awards and leave. |

Hi Ian, very creative both from the camera movement and the processing. I see the possibility of two good images from this chance opportunity. I'm glad you didn't pitch it. Here is the easiest for me. |

Hi Robin. I get a lot of feelings from this image. Like Cork during the Irish potato famine, when all the good potatoes were sent to England. |

Hi Joan, I thought I'd take your original image, which I prefer, and add more to it. I have a background image and sheep images from my trip to Ireland that I thought might add a story. I added a painting effect to my composite. |

Thank you, Robin. I can see the effect could look as you say. Rabbits and rattlesnakes seem to thrive in this arid region and provide the food chain. |

Thanks for the update! I'll try to keep the terms more clearly, but since I hunt and peck, not type, my responses and comments take time. Hope you guys are doing well and your eyesight improves. Dorinda got new glasses, but they don't seem to be a great improvement for her. Dratted aging process! |

Thanks, Judy. I wish I couldn't see them, but they are present, nonetheless. I'll keep looking for a fix. Unfortunately, somehow, I only got a jpeg, and not a raw image to work with. I looked at my settings before shooting and still don't know how jpeg's came up. |

You got me with FWIW. I had to google it "FWIW" is an initialism for "for what it's worth". Yes, you must be lazy with only an APSA, MPSA, in 3 study groups - this one, a monochrome one of which you are the secretary and a travel one, and also serve as the director of the Travel Essay competition.
I should be so lazy! |

Thanks, Tim, the black halo is there prior to any sharpening, which I only do locally anyway. Never the sky. I will probably crop the bottom to a triangle when I finish it. The black, however, unless I can remove it, will keep it from ever being an image I care about. A B&W might be better for this poor light. |

I tried all I knew in PS and LR and couldn't remove it. I'm wondering now if it is a lens issue. Bob Legg mentioned a 400 ISO and while it doesn't seem like it to me, the camera-lens combo may not have liked my settings. Summer is coming and I can take more shots here to see if the settings or hardware are an issue. Thanks for your comments. |

I thought the same thing, Karen, and when I tried to add canvas in PS to the front, all I got was junk. I didn't try AI as that isn't yet my cup of tea. I'm anxious to see what Tim says about your suggestion. |

Thank you, Karen. I think your image might be more impactful. Since the boy's legs are cut off by the dome thing, would you also like it better if dad were left and the kid removed? |

Thank you, Bob. I don't do a lot of photography anymore, as I get tired easily. I set the camera to ISO 64 to get some ICM images at lower shutter speeds this day and didn't change it when I noticed this shot. I still shoot in Manual mode and use the rear wheel to get my exposure centered. The Z8 has enough IS for me to handhold, but I usually try to lean on something for more balance and sit in my walker. At 28 mm I didn't need a lot of SS. |

This is the color evaluation, which is useful sometimes to see if any colors or tones are over saturated. The evaluations were created by Blake Rudis. Just out of curiosity what is an edit purist? |

Thanks, Bob. I didn't think you would like any of my thoughts, but my comments are always just possibilities. I seldom produce award winning images, so my opinions aren't always good.
I am including a tone evaluation of your image. The white areas draw the eye first, gray are midtones and black areas are stoppers. I'll also add a reply with the color evaluation. I use them for my own images to see what I have done. I try to allow the eye to travel around the elements, or direct the eye to the subject. |

Thank you, Tim. I wish I had taken more time to learn with my Canon A1, including taking B&W images. I was never more than a snapshot photographer then. Mostly Kodak color slide films. |

Hi Ron, excellent composition. Your goal of showing the yearly bloom is met. I am not sure you have set up complementary bokeh, though. The green colors are too muddy; I don't see a purple/magenta complement to the yellows. The blur is there for the background, but I think the Christmas Cactus is lost in the technical aspects. It might be helpful to see the original and for more explanation of your processing. |

Hi Bob, I really like that you have added the glow. The red and yellow balloon is much brighter and separates the balloons into two odd numbers. allowing the kayaker to be a third element. I'm not so sure about the reflections and the kayaker being part of the composition. I might consider removing the reflections, masking, and brightening the kayaker and brightening the trees on the right, which I think compete with the green balloon. Pushing the light beams seems more dramatic to me. |

Great image, Karen. Lighting is interesting and the color pops. I might consider cleaning up the white spots on the "blackground" (pun intended) and the black spots on the flower.
I worked a little on the stem too, blurring, and pushing it to the background with the Radial spot masks in LR. It is probably more formal for the rose to be pointed down at the viewer, but I wanted to see how it looked cropped and flipped vertically. |

Thanks for playing with your image, Judy. I like it and can see the faintest hint of a face and hand (sort of like "The Scream,) at the opening of each of the light tubes. I'm less attracted to the pastel color palette. Doubling up was a good idea and presents a better canvas for your abstract. Excellent job. |

Hi Elaine, I enjoy the windmill a lot. I wonder if you can pull more color from the image, and make it fill the frame more by a different crop. The grass on the right merges with the end of the blade and stops my eye there. I might consider cloning the bushes on the left to hide the stuff on the right of the windmill and add balance. I want the windmill to be level in some way, using a transform tool in post processing. It looks tilted back and left to me. I used a high key sky, since the gray skies aren't that interesting. Just minor tweaks could make it pop. |

I really enjoy looking at this image, Tim. I think I would enjoy more space around the riders, but I realize there may have been elements that got in the way. As a general group, we can add canvas, and I did in PS just using the crop tool with content-aware fill. I used the clone stamp tool to remove some areas of repetition that content-aware seems to create. I added some grain to the new areas to try to match what you had and brightened the background to bring forward the racers. Just some minor suggestions to give a great sports shot more room. |

Thank you, Elaine. From the position of his arms and head, the man was taking a cell shot of Mt Rainier, so I wouldn't expect the child to touch dad. That is just my version though, and your version would be infinitely more intimate.
Does the dark area around the people's heads pose a problem for you?
Are the clouds realistic?
