20 Jul 22 Reply Sorry for monopolizing Bev's comments below. Please add a reply to her comment if you wish. I get carried away sometimes. I think I'm soooo funny. Jul 20th
20 Jul 22 Reply Okay! I'll trade my oldest son (Social Worker and Chico (CA) State grad) for your son and throw in two bunnies. He can still critique your work, too. Does that make my lighter edit of Shirley's work more attractive?
May I ask why you included a copyright on your DD24 flower image this month?

20 Jul 22 Reply Hi Bev,
How does your firstborn feel about being traded? Adobe is joining the AI wave and adding downloadable Neural Filters, and do not require trading a relative!

Hope your weather is getting better. My parents are buried in Sarasota, and I had forgotten how humid it can be until I returned for their funerals.

20 Jul 22 Reply Since that disaster, I bought a 12-Bay Synology NAS to back up all my files, and store back-ups on Synology C2 cloud too. Redundancy is now my middle name! I not only lost some good images, I lost many memories which are irreplaceable.

20 Jul 22 Reply Thanks, Fred. Referencing competition, not study groups.

20 Jul 22 Comment Hi Angela, I think your artistic vision in this image is strong. The colors are chosen perfectly. It has the look of Audobon, which I love.

I too am a proponent of using software to resolve issues I have of getting my photos sharp. As Shirley can attest from my time in DD23, I am not a proponent of borders in DDG, because they maker it harder to isolate the image for visual comments. I save borders for images after I'm ready to print. Just my opinion and usually highly disagreeable to others.

PSA Guidelines state that any border applied to Nature, Photojournalism and Photo Travel Prints should be no more than 5 pixels and either grey, black or white, depending on the background of the print.

20 Jul 22 Comment Hi Shirley, Lovely shot from your cruise. I do agree with Angela that it needs straightened along the roof lines to lose the slight starboard list! I tried another Topaz filter called Stormy Seas, and also like it a little bit brighter, so I also added a radial spot to bring my eye into the tower from the river. Beautiful image. Jul 13th
20 Jul 22 Comment Hi Fred, You've created a great image, and used your tools in a way that makes it look natural.
I wasn't far enough along in my photo making to get any great shots while in the park, and then lost my images from four years due to bad back-up routines. Lessons learned.
I'm hoping my time in DD20 will help me to gain the skills I need to create "striking" images like this. I too am in awe of this work.

20 Jul 22 Comment Hi Sam,
I am in agreement with the group, that the background needs to be totally black in order not to have distractions. There is some extra space at the top and bottom that could be cropped if you like. If the building it lit at night, it could be an interesting image too. Excellent image.

20 Jul 22 Comment Hi Ham,
I also love the Oregon Coast lighthouses and you have captured a beautiful shot of the Heceta Head Light. I like the sky addition and the added texture in the building. The crop is excellent and makes it a unique vision. The only suggestions I have are from PSCC, but I assume their are similar adjustments in DxO. I used two neural filters in PS that added a landscape adjustment, mostly reducing the light created on the Fresnel lens, and the a Depth filter that blurred the background sky. I also used auto straighten in LRCC as there is a very slight left tilt in the main area of our view. Wonderful work.

20 Jul 22 Reply Thank you, Shirley. I didn't explain my concern very well. The second horse's back two hooves are overlapping and look weird to me. I do like the motion blur. I have removed the pole. Much better. Jul 11th
20 Jul 22 Reply Thank you, Ham.
I'm not the admin for the group, but even though you use DxO software I will imagine that there are similar tools in all photo-editing programs. Please don't let that stop you from suggesting edits. or in posting a revised image. With all the YouTube videos online, we can review how DxO does it and use similar tools in our software.
I can dodge the dark area a bit, but I think I need the space for the horses to run.

20 Jul 22 Reply Thanks Angela. It does look better with the pole cloned out. Your brush work on the tail is inspirational. I need to be more detail oriented if I wish to improve. Great work, and exceedingly helpful. Jul 6th
20 Jul 22 Reply Thank you, Fred. I'll try your selection advice. When I look closer at the second horse, even in my original, I see what may have been artifacts introduced during processing on the front leg. The colors look weird to me now.
I am not sure how using blend modes would be using someone else's way.

96 Jul 22 Reply Reflections are always darker. Some of the light is absorbed in the reflective surface, depending on the angle of the light source.

96 Jul 22 Reply Thank you, Gloria. We are currently in a "replace the sky" mode in photo editing. We were in an "HDR" mode for a while. Modes come and go, either driven by digital software companies or YouTube photographic sites or just changing tastes. Art is never static for long, and popularity is always the driver. Each time I replace a sky, I try to learn more about what a natural sky could do to an image and how the foreground is effected. Sound pompous don't I. Jul 24th
96 Jul 22 Reply Thanks, Bob. I see what you are saying. I may do a Haru, and add a blank layer and draw on it to see if I can find enough triangular layers to make an image. May be this one is a dud, in my stack of many duds. On to an abstract try. Jul 17th
96 Jul 22 Reply I tried a content-aware move, but couldn't get it to work very well. Any other suggestions? Jul 13th
96 Jul 22 Reply I never ignore edits or comments. I may wish this to be a California coast sometimes. Being able to suspend and alter reality is a great advantage in digital imagery. Thanks for the comments. Jul 13th
96 Jul 22 Reply I think we all have to train our eye to find a subject and only use supporting elements, or negative space that enhance the subject to create a good image. We need someone to design photographer's blinders! Jul 13th
96 Jul 22 Reply Thanks, Cheryl. I'll have to consider a vertical crop. I'm going to try moving one of the haystacks too at Dan's suggestion. I need to take more images, moving my feet to get more options. Good crop.

96 Jul 22 Reply Thank you, Haru. The Washington and Oregon coasts are more cool, and the California coast more warm looking. I concentrated on the sky colors too much while choosing a LUT. Attention to detail is no longer a strong suit for me. I enjoy your image. Jul 12th
96 Jul 22 Reply Thanks, Dan. I will always love the sea and all the coasts. I though I had overdone the blue. That is the value of having a group look. Jul 12th
96 Jul 22 Comment Hi Gloria, I would like to see the original image before it was processed in Topaz.

The sun seems to have picked up some artifacts, or else became opaque. There seems to be reflections in the most powerful light source in our universe. I don't have any idea how to repair it.
The colors and sharpness are excellent, the mountains are layered nicely, but I really don't get the sun.

96 Jul 22 Comment Hi Cheryl, Another creative image for this month. I think the glow on the flowers add interest. The serpentine trunk is well lighted and I enjoy the overall painterly effect. Good job. Nice balance/conversation between the blue sky and the white flowers. Jul 12th
96 Jul 22 Comment Hi Dan,
I would call this a "See-scape" and consider it is a very creative image. I could imagine this to be a large 36x40 print and be a gallery image. Doesn't need any work from me. Great work.

96 Jul 22 Comment Hi Robert,
I enjoy this image more than the others, but think it could use more light. The softness of the light doesn't bother me. The trees are all that need to be in focus, and I think they are. You really did a good job of showing the power in the scene, but the trees are a sign of hope. Great story and image.

96 Jul 22 Comment Hi Haru,
Your image this month is hard for me to comment upon. If your intent was for the viewer to see the beauty of cherry blossoms, the composition doesn't work for me. I see too much going on. I'm unsure what your subject is. The tree is the brightest area for sure, but because part of the trunk is behind the wall, it seems more like a framing element to me. Robert used a crop effectively IMO. I also would suggest that a closer approach to the blossoms would convey your emotion better.

1. There isn't a focal point for me in the image.
2. The composition doesn't work for me.
3. probably the B&W. Over all it is too dark in my opinion. A celebration of a Japanese Cherry tree should be bright and uplifting.

I hope there is something you can use in my comments. I am including a stock photo (free) for a reference. It is bright if not all that great, which is why it is a freebie, I imagine.

96 Jul 22 Reply Hi Don and Haru. I am unable to re-title the black and white version of Haru's image due to the constraints of our DDG program. All extra images beyond the main image are uploaded as Original, Original #2 etc. up to 3 images. I apologize for the misunderstanding.

I am adding Haru's B&W back in on this reply as I lost it above. Your admin is a dufus!
