As Jose mentioned, the blown out white highlights attract the eye since this is the brightest part of the image.
I applied a luminosity mask on an exposure adjustment layer to take down the highlights. This still left a grey blob in the upper right corner so I cropped this out.
My reedit was similar to Jose's

I read again a reference to Weston and f64. As you and Jose pointed out, Weston had remarkable DoF in his images because of his f64.
When you said you much preferred my first image. Were you talking about the one I originally posted? I have put on four images: original; color; a reedited version of the original; and then the one just above your reply.

I reedited the pepper just using PS monochrome layer, toned it in Silver Effex, and used Color Effex light centre dark exterior on the stems. Then I added a radial filter with +expsoure to brighten the area around the stem. Do you prefer this version? |

Thanks for posting the pepper image for others in my group to see.
I am taking the PSA History of Photography course and am on the last lesson. When I saw the Weston pepper image, I just had to photograph a pepper but used two peppers. For my course, I was experimenting with different Nik Silver Effex presets so tried the pinhole preset with modifications on this image. Here is another pepper image.
I did do some other pepper images and I have attached one. Is it too phallic.
A month ago, when I first saw the Weston pepper image I thought in a supermarket, someone might reject this pepper because of its convoluted shape. Instead, Weston with his use of light and shadow, captured the peppers sensuous character.
In my original color pepper image, color takes over, especially since yellow and orange are dominant colors against a neutral background. The meaning of the stems touching is lost.
I will reedit my image for the group, using a less severe contrasty approach, and attach it. This is a good excercise so show how we edit monochrome impacts the experience of the image.

You have captured the intensity of the man very beatifully and I like the snake. Perhaps it is the placement of the snake, but did not feel it adds to the image. With the snake, the centre of the image for me is a black hole.
You may wish to check parts of the lelft side of the shirt collar for blownout highlights. The ear drum is not blown out but you may consider toning it down slightly. |

I cannot believe this image. Is it one of your creations? It is a wonderful capture.
My only suggestions for improvement is perhaps checking the the following aras: fuzz between the two paws, mid point behind the back paw, and top of the head.

I also find that the fog draws me into the image and I like the variations in tone in the fog. I find the image mysterious and like the way my eye moves from the left bottom corner to the upper right.

This is a beautiful portrait that gives a sense of the woman's personality. Could you tell me what your aperture was. I noted that the neck and shoulders were softened and I did not know if this was in processing or because of the aperture.

I am happy that you can see what I felt when I edited the image. You experienced the equivalent of what I felt (Stieglist's equivalents).
I have attached the original color image taken at ISO 400 with a tripod. When I converted the image to monochrome using the Nik pinhole preset with modifications, I was absolutely taken away by the monochrome version with the stems touching and felt that tenderness.
I also did some other pepper images and felt the same emotional response. I did not know how people would react to the stronger image. |
