72 Nov 24 Comment Maria - welcome to this group. I've here for 5 years and learnt so much as a bonus over enjoying a huge variety of Nature images on the way.

You did well developing your image - it looks well presented, although I would have lightened the shadows a tad more in your version. We all crave for clean backgrounds with some foliage to give a story for the bird/location, but when confronted with so much detail, Bruce is right to hone in to a smaller canvas - and then darkening the background/lightening bird makes 'him' stand out better. I think your Sony camera is FF, so a big crop should be achievable and still maintain quality - that's where Topaz Photo Ai is so good, in being able to rescue a tight crop etc. You may not have this situation to justify it though.

72 Nov 24 Comment Love this Isaac! Pyramid shape, the action and 'look' of those on the pyramid, plus the relative size male > female. Your whole island shot is also good & interesting - I had never thought of taking a series of images with a long lens & merging! Will remember that! Nov 19th
72 Nov 24 Comment Nice image Barbara, where you have captured him calling (I didn't know this is 'bugling'!). Is there an outline on the right where a deer was removed? I only noticed it after reading your text. Nov 17th
72 Nov 24 Reply Many thanks Chris, I appreciate you comments here, which are so logical! I've tried to make adjustments to both the snow and mostly the birds (agree with you that they are part of the story). Nov 16th
72 Nov 24 Reply Thank you Isaac - I have put an adjusted one up in reply to Chris Nov 16th
72 Nov 24 Comment This is a lovely silhouette Bruse, well composed with the volcano in tha gap and eagle clearly positioned. Square crop does make sense. Would look amazing as a large poster. Thank you for the info too. Nov 12th

91 Nov 24 Comment Cindy - Very good timing in Capturing some interaction of these lovely birds. You did a good job in lightening the birds, with good feather detail shown.

I prefer your updated image as to background. I think we use a very similar system in situations like this - Mask the birds, work on it/them - then invert the mask to work on the background (here I find its a fight to stop the brightness while stopping these areas going grey. I play with White/Highlight sliders to of this in Lightroom).

91 Nov 24 Comment Steve - Wow, a beautifully taken and presented bird in a snowy setting - yes, makes for a great card. It is great as is, but I would try to lighten the shadows a fraction on a mask taking in the head/beak darker red/black areas. I would try and see what it's like. Cindy's idea has merits too.

In the UK, Winter arrived this week - in north Wales/N England and most of higher ground of Scotland (I live southern England now!). Our daughter & husband had a great walk in snow in the north Wales hills yesterday - lucky them!

91 Nov 24 Reply Skilful technique - I like your result in your main picture above Nov 20th
91 Nov 24 Comment Sunat, you have presented a very nice image of the Goodwit in its environment. How much one crops is always a personal choice - I would crop a little from the top so that the roof of your image is mostly the green foliage and fractionally from the right to stop it being too central.

It's interesting you chose to use F13: I'm sure a much smaller aperture would have had the dept of field at 400mm to retail all the bird in focus.

Nice image Sunat.

91 Nov 24 Comment Bruce - Yes a captivating colourful bird, taken (I presume) in its preferred location.
Capturing it as it just moves works for me and the important bits are tack sharp. How about a portrait view? Very nice image.

91 Nov 24 Reply Nice idea Steve (re landscape settings) - I too would love to see examples of this in play if that suits you in the coming months. Nov 20th
91 Nov 24 Comment Jerry, this is a nice shot of a pair of Cattle Egrets win their environment and you did well to find an open view of them. Your development of the birds look perfect to me - no obvious excess brightness in the whites etc. You also did well in branch removal - I wonder of a bit of negative clarity work (or similar) would totally remove any evidence of the ex-branch close to the right bird's head. The front leaves could be a tax less bright to help the eye pass over them - they seem brighter than on your original.

Good image.

91 Nov 24 Reply Very interesting Jerry - I can understand what you say. How about this as an alternative tighter crop, which has also been rotated to take out the boat and rope shadow areas? I would welcome your views. Nov 11th
