Thanks Bruce. Cropping is fine - just can't add or delete stuff within what's left! I will take a bit off the right. |

Thanks Randy - I might have a bit more to the left vs Isaac's crop (it's a tad close to the croc). I was using 820ff equiv, so 100 yds or so. |

Truly beautiful Bruce! So sharp, clear with a perfect background. But its the unusual shaped branch which makes in 'special'. |

I like the impact this has. I don't think you were wanting to end up with a traditional nature image - but one that says Wow!
Before I looked at Isaac's suggestions, I felt your bird is too central and I thus agree the impact becomes greater by cropping more from the right and probably from the bottom too.
The orange and green really makes this striking! |

Mary - this is interesting and what I feel helps is the very central position of the rider. That would be enhanced if the bridge was precisely centred in the image by cropping slightly from left. I don't worry about the right branch. I hope one day to get to Tibet! |

Very arty Marie! I too am finding the new Lightroom controls so easy to select subjects, invert the selection for doing work on etc. You succeed very well here.
Have you tried flipping it so the stem comes from the left corner - the western eye generally prefers that. |

Lovely Isaac. We always have a camera with us now! A square crop works very well and I like the treatment you have done on the colourful surrounding plants: they don't detract now.
I have started using Portrait mode where the phone allows re the distance of the subject as this gives DOF control as well as the generally available exposure compensation adjustments etc. |

Barbara - welcome!
Interesting image and I particularly enjoy the shape the two birds together give the image. Isaac's crop does seem sensible - I agree with your desire to include environment, but as has been said, the area below the nest doesn't add anything - in fact, have more bland sky there adds a distraction and the closer crop gives a nice platform to the image.
Eyes tend to lock on to the brightest part of any image, so it is rarely desirable to have an uninteresting sky the brightest area. Probably because Isaac was working on a small file, his end image has darkened the actual birds, and I prefer the brightest of you main image as to the birds, but not the sky!
You have an excellent image here. |

Many thanks Barbara! One aspect of my photography which differs from others in this group is that I am a 'Reality Photographer' - I never remove/add or change colour etc to anything, so my output may end up in Nature, Travel or PJ PSA Exhibitions. I enter club comps and open class of Exhibitions, but still like to keep to my core focus. Probably stubbornly so, to my detriment! |
