Gosh, Isaac a truly lovely capture and you are right to crop in to the scene, to concentrate on the cub and the moment with its parent.
I think it's a personal taste as to how punchy the development takes the image. Yours is certainly striking! You say it was raining and dull, so what you saw must have been closer to what Bruce has provided - still achieving a focus on a tender moment.
Many Exhibition images are towards the punchy end of this choice to deliver high impact for judging. This may not be right though. So in my mind, it depend what one will use images for.
- For a book, library or wall - Bruce's version (or at least nearer to this)
- For Competition of all types - the punchy version. |

This is a great capture Bruce. You were clearly well positioned.
You have shown us the complete picture of the pelican coming into land, with the coastal scene there completing the story, but not at all distracting.
I note you used 1/2500 and looking back at your recent birds in flight images, you do tend to use fast speeds. You have the light to help here - but interesting never the less. |

Marie- when I saw your image and original, before reading your text, I concluded that this was another amazing example of a heavy crop using your modern FF Nikon - but no!
A heavy crop with a (good) cropped sensor! I use Topaz A1 range and feel they make a big difference over both Lightroom and other plug-ins. This is a good example.
I prefer the colours of the original vs your 2nd version and accept the blue tint needs tweaking for, but this is a great shot!
I find it interesting this was shot at 1/500 - I would have guessed faster. |

Yes, the pool is Infinity type - there were 2 (with 2 other pools plus 18 hot tubs, some of which were again infinity type!). It was the newest P&O ship (Carnival Group) - we prefer the smaller ships, but this trip was fine as Covid rules limited the guests to under 3,000 vs 5,200 capacity. Its the 6th largest cruise ship in the world.
Re phone use - I am using this more now, but obviously use main cameras where possible - I would have lost the moment for this shot if I had to get my camera from our cabin! I will work on the pool water to smooth the surface better - I couldn't do that using phone software. |
