Hi Mary ,Great idea.
Your introduction voiced my opinion when you asked
" does it work " and " its very harsh for a young woman ".
Personally i prefer your original colour image , however your idea for black and white would work if the black was not so black.
I also find that the brightness of her hand draws my eye there and it looks awkward.
As Marie Verrett suggested , bring up the shadows a little and it will . make for a softer image. I do like the original pose.

Hi Judith,
The in camera movement / blur suits this lovely image , and the tones are very nice too.
I agree that the bright burnt out area on the left lets it down .
Personally i find that prints on Fine Art Textured Paper retain the colours /tones as well as reducing highlights.
