Larry, Thanks for this tip. I will try hard to remember it, but will keep it handy in my camera bag! (Is memory one of the first things to go?). ;-) |

yMadhusudhan, Thank you so much for your kind words. It's a good feeling when someone likes your work! ;-) . If you haven't been to Yellowstone, it's a wonder to behold! |

I love a painterly effect so thought I would give this image a try. Hope I still like it in the morning! |

Todd, Thanks for your thoughts on the image. Your comment about the noise in the sky being due in part to the fog, helps me understand another image I took at Mesquite Flats Sand Dunes in Death Valley during a sand storm. The sand in the air created noise which I didn't understand at the time.
I didn't use a tripod since we were on a tour. There was so little time to compose shots, and we moved quickly before the sun burned off the fog. But good tips on decreasing the shutter speed to get better lighting. Thanks! |

Larry, Great tip! I will have to try that. Basically focusing a little over 3' in front of the camera (looking straight ahead of the lens) and that should work at 24mm or wider at f22. Is there a formula you use? |

Todd, Agreed! When I'm at home and can take my time to think about what I want to portray, I do better. But some of the more exciting places I visit are with my husband and/or family on vacations. That's when it gets difficult! I need to do more research ahead of time as well. That would surely help. I was thinking about having a foreground in this photo, but wasn't seeing it as a place for the viewer to stand. I've learned something that I hope will enhance my photos in the future! Thanks for your thoughts. |

What a lovely location! I agree with Michael on trying a pano shot since the large rocks on both sides make a nice frame. However, it might actually detract from the waterfall itself. I do like Larry's version but would have left a bit more space on the right side. Your sharpening and saturation of the image, especially the large rock by the waterfall, made it a place where the viewer might want to step into the cool waters. The 6 second exposure also gave the water a nice silky look. It's always a pleasure to see images from your country! |

Richard, This little hummingbird looks sharp from its beak to its tail feathers! What a great shot! I really like to have their feet in focus, perhaps because they are so delicate. The small highlights on the feet in your image draw attention to the details there. It would be wonderful to have this photo published in Birds and Blooms! I hope you will give it a shot!

Larry, I appreciate your thought process and how you work a scene until you get the shot you want. It takes time and patience and the willingness to sometimes be uncomfortable (like sitting in a stream). And after hearing the story of this photo, I will be less afraid to stack on the filters if needed. I so often over expose my photos.
Also, if you look closely, the fairies are playing just beyond the mist! |

Wayne, Your post processing brought out colors hidden in the RAW file very nicely. I'm only sorry I didn't get to Mammoth Hot Springs when I was in Yellowstone! As you mentioned with my photo, the hyper focal distance is a bit tricky so I too would like to hear more from Larry on this and some of the short cuts he mentioned. I think the orange and green colors might have been saturated a little more (just trying to remember how vibrant the colors were of other springs that I saw there), but you've done a fine job from the RAW image. The strong leading lines from the left lead the viewer into the photo and to the dead trees, and the clouds add drama. What I really love about photography is that I'm learning new things all the time. Thanks for sharing this image and giving me a heads up on what you're learning as well! |

Todd, With such bright sunlight, I'm impressed that there aren't any blown out spots on the flowers or bee. You obviously know your camera settings well. A very pleasing image to see such a small creature so close up. |

My first thought on viewing this image was "Wow"! It is really stunning. The post processing makes it look realistic and not over the top as we see so often everywhere. It draws the viewer's eye right into the image and makes me want to be there! Great job! |

Wayne, Hyperfocal and cropping are issues for me, too. Guess I'll have to go back to Yellowstone and try it again! Thanks for your thoughts, especially on capturing the cycle of life there. |

Larry, I did have enough room to take the bottom of the image all the way to the left corner, but I sometimes struggle with placing it there due to comments from camera club members that it shouldn't be right at the corner. There could have been more of the tree left on the right. Like Wayne, I'm also challenged as to where to cut it off. I do think I cropped it too closely this time. I remember aiming at the mid point of the pond in an effort to use hyper focal distance. You mentioned that you have shortcuts. Please share these as I struggle with getting landscapes in focus (as well as estimating distances).
Thanks for your thoughts and help. |

Your idea of giving the viewer a place to stand is a good one and one that I haven't given much thought...but will in the future! I did try to highlight areas to draw the viewer's eye from left to right. There is some noise in the sky and I will fix that before I enter it into a competition. Thanks for your thoughts! |
