Thanks Larry. That is very helpful. I need to remember to use my ND filter more often. I did some fireworks shots over the 4th and tried it then so I was able to leave the shutter open longer. It's too bad those fireworks shows are so short! |

Wayne, Thanks for your thoughts on my photo. I think Larry should start giving tours and classes!
I'm glad you enjoyed Yellowstone. I look forward to seeing some of your photos from there. I just completed a photo book from our visit last summer. I have to say that it's one of the best places I've visited. Magical indeed! |

Hi Madhusudhan, Thanks for your thoughts on my photo. I'm not sure if the bird was cautious of us. There is a visitors center on an island between two bridges near Ocean City, NJ. The foliage on one side of the island was full of birds of various kinds and there were several photographers standing on the visitors center level. Word has gotten out about the location. The birds seemed to come and go without acting too concerned. I talked to one photographer who was being cautious about alarming the birds. Everyone moved around quietly. There is a similar situation in Venice, Florida where there is a rookery on an island and people can gather around quite closely to it. The birds didn't seem to mind too much there either. In fact, some would light fairly close to people. Maybe they would prefer that people not be around, but there were lots of chicks. Hopefully we were not having a negative impact. |

Todd, They were a nice little family. Cubs looked to be a couple (few?) months old. So nice to see mothers teaching their babies how to live in such a beautiful but unforgiving environment. |

Thanks Richard. I was thrilled when I saw it was going to jump up on that stump. |

Another great photo of a bush chat. It certainly is well suited to blend in with its surroundings. Seems like you got all the settings right. The bird is sharp and the background is not! Perfect! The only thing I would change is to have the bird's head turned slightly toward the camera. No easy feat, especially since she was restless. But overall it's a delightful image. |

This is definitely a spooky spider, and the sunbeam couldn't have been better. I think the spider is actually sharper in the original photo and the left side of the tree and the sticks in the background on the right have been cropped in that image as well. I do like the darker version though. How large is this spider? I would have wanted a really long lens too! (I get what you mean about being excited about a shot without getting set up but sometimes things just happen so quickly!) |

Another great photo! I can almost hear the water falling and the cool air. I look forward to seeing how the image looks once it has a chance to grow on you! Hope you will share it.
You talked about dynamic range. Can you speak as to how you went about achieving this effect? |

Wayne, This image has lots of possibilities with various effects applied. When I first saw it, I thought it looked familiar. Upon reading your description I remembered the same scene when I was at Jackson Lake Lodge last summer. In your first image I like the lighter green of the vegetation in the foreground. And although it's subtle, there is sunlight streaking across the front of the middle mountain. I would try to accentuate that a little more. Overall I think the colors look real, like I remember it anyway! Although I like the drama in Larry's rendition, I think that too much of the blue in the mountains has been lost. But his crop of the vegetation moves the horizon down so it isn't as close to the middle of the photo. I also like the right side cropped to eliminate the burned out area of the sun. It's nice to have such a beautiful scene to photograph! |

Todd, Great hand-held photo taken from a boat at 700mm! You mentioned that there were 2 cubs. It would have been nice to see both of them if the other one had been close by. Catching the mother bear with her paw on the rock was a plus - it's huge! I also appreciate the natural environment, the water, rocks and moss, their colors and textures, and how the bears stand out against their surroundings. Your post processing really helped bring all this out. Everyone has expressed good ideas in ways the photo could have been improved. But overall, the image drew me in and held my attention and I have to admit that I'm a little jealous for the opportunity you had! |

The colors in this image make for a nice contrast, setting off the lavender and reds in the orchid against the green background. The raindrops are the "frosting on the cake" in this image in my opinion. I'm always happy to find an opportunity like this, and I usually come away feeling great after capturing something so fragile and beautiful, even if the photo isn't perfect! I agree with the others in their assessments of the technical aspects of the photo, but it was a great find, took a lot of effort to photograph and I hope it will bring back good memories from your trip. |

Not a problem! You really improved the image. I will have to try some of the things you did in LR. I think my image of the bird was a bit bright and I struggled with a dark background and dark bird. |
