Sorry, Oliver- I put my reply in the wrong place - it's further down the post :-( |

I agree absolutely, Oliver. Context is very important, especially if the work is, in essence, environmental portraiture. In that case, the context is something you want the viewer to look at and understand so it's not something you want to remove. I think the balance needs to make sure that there is enough context to give meaning to the main subject/s of the image but not so much that it dominates it/them. |

Thanks Oliver. I think that the change really brings home the adage that you should decide on what your want the viewer to look at then remove, or minimise, any elements which detract from your purpose. |

It was because I found that the relatively bright colours in the top left caught my attention and reduced the impact of the woman and the baby. See the suggested modified image below. As it happens, to my eye, it does emphasise her gaze to the upper right. |

Thank you all so much for your very kind comments. I appreciate them very much and I'm so pleased that you like the work I do. I have to say that this was a tricky image to get right especially as the main subject was so small and the contrast on his face was high, so it's a particular pleasure to me that you all like it.
The main problem was that I really needed a longer focal length lens for this even though the prime lenses I use have the advantage of being very fast. I've just invested in a new Nikkor 28mm to 300 mm f/3.5 to 5.6 lens which is amazing. It should solve the problem of having the wrong lens on the camera to capture this sort of shot quickly.

This is beautifully sharp and an excellent crop from the original which shows the detail of the iguana very clearly, Richard. I too am curious about the blue colouration. It does look unnatural and perhaps if the brightness is due to the processing, you could de-saturate the blue are a tad? |

I like this very much, Nick. It is a great, amusing concept, well executed. The Giraffe does seem to be floating in the air a bit but I'm sure that's something you can fix. |

The image works really well in monochrome, John, as it really emphasises the shapes and patterns. I agree with the others that it could benefit from a bit of tidying up. |

This is a really good image, Oliver. I like the colour palette and the expression on her face. It has a very dynamic feel to it and your use of a shallow depth of field with the point of focus on the face works really well. The only suggestion I have for improvement is to clone out the bright blue background on the top left hand side which draws my eye away from the woman and the baby.
Having now read the other comments, I see that the bright blue has already been commented upon. If it were mine, I'd either clone it out so it matches the colours on the right hand side or darken it even more.

I really like the curved flow in this, which is emphasised by the increasing size of the pods. It's very well seen and captured. Like Richard, I prefer it without the buildings as it make the image slightly more abstract. Very well done indeed. |

I like the concept and colour palette of this very much, Barbara. The artefacts, in particular the halos on many of the edges and the black spot, need to be fixed though. I've found that the easiest way of removing haloes it to enlarge the image so you can see the individual pixels and then clone them out. You can also reduce the artefacts in the background by using a slight Gaussian blur, removing the effect on the rose using a layer mask. I've had a quick go at doing this and my version is below. I hope you feel that it improves the original. |
