Excellent composition Richard. Loved the action freeze with right sharpness despite aperture @ f4. I guess those grass bunch were very close in the bg to still come that sharp @f4.
Brilliant overall! |

Interesting write-up to read Larry. I appreciate your step not to show the spot despite your friend helped you to ID the bird. Hope he did not feel totally disappointed after that 2 hours drive in vain :)
This shows how serious one should be to respect the nature undisturbed wherever possible. Really liked your approach. I know one of my other friends did not want to give away the know hows of a rare Spider knowing what researchers do to that small creature. Its this little way we can give back to nature too...
As for the image, the bird is brought our clear despite of cluttered back ground. very nice. Just one observation from me. I see the beak is merging with the twig in the bg. Probably a small clone or reduced exposure on that twig might be better.
Can't wait to see the next month's image. Let me guess... this mother with her chicks? |

Very artsy image I would say Jason. I took the liberty of editing your image and played a bit with selective adjustments using Radial Filter. Also, cropped it horizontally to bring out the bird.
Nevertheless, it's certainly a great artistic image... |

Lovely bird Todd! Clean and sharp image. I liked the background in the second image better. Wish you got such bg for this isolated bird. Presently the foliage behind is slightly brighter and brings my attention to those after my first look of the bird. May be it would help if you toned it down. Do you also have the Water level shot by any chance? I do understand your point on weather + tripod constraint though ;) |

Right timing to capture that expression Michael. I like the way you have cleaned up your presentation of the image, showing only that expression and wet body with little water drops in the bg. Superb!
I would have preferred a little tighter crop to make it better.
I could think of this caption "A shelter could help" :) |

Appreciate your comment Michael. This is already sharpened much using the High Pass Filter in PS. I have noticed increased sharpness beyond a point spoils the subject (some sort of haziness starts to show up). |

Hello Larry, we had switched off the car engine but I guess it could be very minor shake of my unstable hand rested on the car door frame may be. Interesting note about the TC. Will try once again while using a tripod for better results. Thanks for the observations and tips on increased Shutter speed. I was always worried to use high ISO if I shot up the SS. But coming from D7200 to D850, I probably haven't fully tuned my mind to the beast I have in-hand. Will have to work on it honestly.
I usually use a single point of 4 points focus system for my shoots. May be I should try higher number of focus points...
This raptor is about the size of Steppe Eagle or slightly smaller (say 2 - 2.5ft in length and around 5ft wing span). |

Good shot to capture it's expression Michael. My caption would be "Give me a shelter please..." :)
I like the cropped versions from Richard & Larry. |
