I'm leaving for the Dakotas tomorrow morning and hope to get some good shots like this one. The light areas in the image look like iceburgs. I think you need to tone them down a bit, and increase lightness of the dark areas. Then add a ton of contrast. Thanks. |

Yep, that's a wonderful bokeh. And I like the raindrops. If you were shooting at about 1/400 it would be better. Bird is super sharp and pose is good and I like the way you darkened the background a bit. Good! |

I agree this is a great shot. Wonderful sharpness. There is also an opportunity to make a nice image from your original. Crop 1x1 and include more of the plant with those beautiful yellow flowers and flower buds. Might not be more beautiful but adds interest and environment. |

Thanks for telling how you make a plan for the shot and the things you considered. I think everything works here. Great story and let's face it, that's a big stick. I think I'd like to see a little more space around the bird, all sides.

The face and eyes really steal the show on this one, IMO. Face and eyes are super sharp! So I would consider a tighter crop, maybe in an 8x10 format and you can still show the habitat. I like David's idea to try lowering highlights a bit in the background. And (get ready I'm about to use the "V" word) try using a slight vignette. |

Hey Susan. That's a beautiful subject. Love those red feet. I like the pose and background. The image has great balance with the bird in a good position and extra room on the right side. I might have tried removing the brown stick in the background, but no big deal. I agree focus is soft overall, but the eye is sharp. The top of the bird's head is maybe a little too bright. Thanks. |

What a coincidence! I did the exact same calculations before making the shot. No, actually the shot was quite accidental. I focused on the bird perched on the limb behind it in the image and did a burst of shots. I think/hope that the wide area continuous focus helped keep the bird sharp in the image. I've been trying different focus settings on birds in flight, but my success rate has been very low. This one probably belongs in the "lucky shot" category. |
